Gospel choir concert
The Irish Wheelchair Association Laois are holding a concert featuring Portlaoise Gospel choir with special guest appearance by the IWA ROC. Misfits choir at the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel on Friday October 18 at 8pm. Tickets €10, available at the door or at IWA Laois, 0578694030.
KIDS AND KOFFEE
‘Kids & Koffee’ parent and toddler playgroup takes place every Friday 10am - 12pm in the Ballyroan Community Hall. It costs just €3 per household and all parents, childminders and pre-school children are very welcome. Its a community-run group and a great place to meet and make friends over a cup of tea or beaker of juice. If you’d like to join us, call Kyra on 0860651485, or just come along on Friday.

A review and briefing on Tidy Towns results in County Laois will be held in Ballacolla Community Hall on October 7 at 7.30pm. The national Tidy Towns new emerging trends in the judging criteria had now placed a greater emphasis on wildlife and natural amenities, sustainable waste and resource management also the development of a biodiversity action plan. This event is hosted by Frank Donaldson, tourism consultant. Chris Uys will speak on sustainable waste and resource management. Many Tidy Towns groups are already working on their plans for 2014 if you have any interest in helping out your local Tidy Towns committee this would be a great opportunity to meet like minded people for what promises to be an interesting and stimulating evening.
Laois Connects, promoting positive mental health and wellbeing which ran from September 28 - October 5 was a tremendous success. Three events organised in Abbeyleix offered a variety of topics from Healthy Food for a Healthy Mind and Caring for the Carer, Tommy Murphy and Sean Dunne from ACT Ltd who presented the very successful TV programme ‘Taking Care Of of Business’ had a very stimulating and informative workshop during Laois Connects week.
The third Applefest held on September 29 on the grounds of Heritage House in brilliant sunshine was the most successful ever, with people coming from as far as Tipperary, Carlow, Kildare and Dublin to taste the freshly juiced apples.
100 years of ICA
A book documenting the history of the ICA will be launched on November 6 by Liz Wall, national president of the ICA. The venue is Heritage House Abbeyleix at 7.30pm and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
A fancy dress party will take place in Eamon A’Chnoics Raheen on Saturday October 19 in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. Spot prizes for best costume, and a raffle will be held. Admission €5, contact Geraldine, 086 3726565.
Laois native and Ballymaloe chef Darina Allen will be in at the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel on Thursday November 7 in support of Abbeyleix Golf Club.

The Laois branch of MS is holding a fundraising dance in the Manor Hotel Abbeyleix on this Thursday night October 17 with music by Louise Morrissey commencing at nine thirty and your support will be gratefully appreciated.
Join the fun of a race night in Leonards Bar, Abbeyleix on October 25 in aid of the new HUG Abbeyleix fundraising campaign. All money raised will go to upgrade the facilities at Heritage House.
Winners from the Summer Reading Challenge will be presented with prizes on Wednesday October 16 at 3.30pm.
