The Mission Alive group will hold a coffee morning/cake sale in Fr Noel Dunphy’s house on Friday August 1 from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Donations of cakes on morning of sale welcome. All proceeds go to the Orphanage Project in Lusaka in Zambia.

On Thursday July 24 author Alan Nolan, will hold a comic drawing workshop at 11am. This is suitable for ages 9 to 12, booking is essential.

Preparations are underway for the registration of our 26 athletes going to the All Ireland Community Games finals in Athlone in August. The first weekend we have swimmers and cross-country participation and the second weekend we have both individual track and field and relay teams taking part. Laois County Council invite all those aged 50 years and over to a public consultation about plans to make Laois, its towns and villages, more age friendly. This takes place in MDA on Wednesday July 30 from 11am to 1pm.

Wednesdays: Art Exhibition: Mountmellick Active Retirement artists are showcasing their oil and acrylic art work in the Mill Restaurant until Wednesday August 13. All welcome along to view the work. Some are for sale. On Wednesday July 23 there will be no morning meeting. A social evening tea will be held in the Mill Restaurant at 7pm. On Tuesday August 5 and Thursday August 7 the Craft Group, in preparation for Christmas Fair, will meet in Wolfe Tone Court 10am to noon.

Men’s Shed will meet weekly in Wolf Tone Court until they get their own premises. They are investigating obtaining premises, shed or disused building that can house the tools of the trade. Anyone who can assist in this please contact 087 6578736. At the meeting on Tuesday July 29 at Wolf Tone Court, they will travel to the Slieve Blooms and climb the Ridge of Capard (approx. 1 hour). There was much regret at the death of Mrs Noelle Jestin (neé Hayes) of Derryguile and formerly of Birr on Friday July 11. Noelle will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Remains reposed at her residence until removal to St Paul’s Church on Saturday evening. Funeral service was held at 3pm on Sunday with burial afterwards in the adjoining churchyard. The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Noelle’s sons William, John, Eddie, Richard and Stewart, family, relatives and friends.
