Borris in Ossory ICA Guild will hold the December meeting on this Wednesday 5 in St Canice’s Hall at 8pm. This meeting will also be the guild Christmas party. There will be plenty of festive goodies, fun and games and spot prizes for everyone. Members are asked to invite along a friend.


Borris in Ossory Social Services will hold its Christmas party and Bingo session in St Canice’s Hall on Saturday afternoon December 15 at 2pm. All are welcome.


Saturday December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception is a Holy Day and Masses in the parish will be as follows - St Canice’s Church, Borris in Ossory – Vigil Mass on Friday evening at 7pm and 11am on Saturday morning, Killasmeestia Church at 8.45 on Saturday morning and 9.45am in Knockaroo Church on Saturday morning.


The Parish Carol Service will take place in St Canice’s Church, Borris in Ossory on Sunday December 23 at 7pm. Members of the four parish choirs or anyone interested in taking part in the Carol Service should come along to the rehearsals in the church on Wednesday December 5, Wednesday December 12 and Wednesday December 19 at 8pm.


Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place each Tuesday in St Canice’s Church, Borris in Ossory from 10am to 3pm. Adoration takes place in Killasmeestia Church on Thursdays from 9.30am to 3pm and in Knockaroo Church on Tuesdays between 2pm and 4pm. Anyone is welcome to come along and spend some time in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.


Fr Jackie Robinson has decided to postpone the trip to the Holy Land until October 2014 because of the volatile situation there at present.


Members of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association would like to thank all who contributed to their recent church gate collection. The total amount collected was €305.


Jack Fahey was nominated for an award recently at a ceremony held in the Killeshin Hotel. The awards ceremony was to honour people who give their time, energy and skills for the betterment of their community. There were a number of categories of which there were 74 nominees. An entertaining evening was had by all which saw the various groups and individuals being applauded for their contributions to their communities. Jack Fahey was nominated for the “Unsung Hero” award. Although he didn’t win the overall prize his contribution to Borris in Ossory was acknowledged and he received a framed certificate to mark the occasion.


St Josephs National School Parents Association St Joseph’s National School Parents Association has produced a 2013 Calendar to mark the occasion of moving from the old school to the new school. They cost €10 each and there is only a limited number available. Calendars will be on sale from any member of Parents Association or from local businesses in the village.


Tickets are currently on sale for St Joseph’s National School annual Christmas raffle. Prizes will include a Christmas Hamper (value €400), Load of timber, Fuel voucher, €100 cash and many more prizes. Tickets are only €1 each and are available locally. The draw will take place in the school P.E. Hall on Friday December 21.


The November meeting of the gardening group was most interesting with a talk on market gardening by Tanguy Toulgoet. There were plenty of tips about the garden in Winter to make it easier to use in Spring and Summer. Thank you very much Tanguy. This month’s meeting is on Thursday December 13 at 8pm. There will be a demonstration of Christmas decorations with table centre pieces and swags. Members of the group will also be making these themselves so please remember to bring some greenery. It is hoped that Mary Hilliard will attend as last year’s demonstration was excellent. As there will be a lot to get through everyone is asked to come as early as possible.


Results of Competition played on Tuesday November 6 were as follows: 1st Michael Murray and Molly Bates, 2nd. Nuala Costelloe and Kathleen Phelan, 3rd. Margaret Scott and Josephine Campion. Tuesday November 13: 1st Breda Kennedy and Maureen Delaney, 2nd Molly Bates and Michael Murray, 3rd Rosarie Cullinane and Noreen Hanrahan. Members please note that the Competition for the Christmas Prizes will be played on Tuesday December 11.


Borris in Ossory Youth club will hold a Variety Concert on Saturday December 22 in Killesmeestia Community Centre. Along with participation from the club’s own members, the concert will also be open to any individual, school, choir, group or club who wish to perform on the night.

The results of last week’s Progressive 25 Drive in the O’Brien Hall were as follows 1st Noel O’Sullivan and Michael Fitzpatrick, 2nd - P.J.Holohan and Michael Muldowney, John and Catherine Dalton, 3rd Michael Murphy and Jack Maher, Leo Kelleher and Jim Walsh, 10th game – Peggy Bergin and Sadie Delaney, 20th game – Mary Kelly and Noreen Ryan, Raffle winner was Noel O’Sullivan.


The Annual Christmas 25 Drive will take place on this Thursday night December 6 at 9pm. This annual event is always a great success and it is hoped that it will be well supported this year. The weekly card game is the only income for this small club so everyone is being asked to come along on the night, give a donation or sponsor a raffle prize.


The Cavanagh Cup Senior Billiards competition is about to commence. Any member interested in taking part should put their name on the sheet posted up in the hall. Only paid up club members are eligible to take part.


Membership Fees for the club are now due and should be paid as soon as possible. The fee for adults is €20 and for students and under 16’s it is €10.


A Christmas Food and Craft Fair will take place in Rathdowney Community Centre on Friday December 14 from 11am to 3pm. There will be a wide variety of local produce on offer including handmade chocolates, Christmas wreaths, candles, paintings, handmade Christmas cards as well as lots of seasonal home baking.
