1916 Commemoration

A public workshopswill be held to develop ideas for the commemoration of the Centenary of the 1916 Rising in Laois on Tuesday, May 12 in Durrow at the Castle Arms Hotel. The workshop will run from 8-10pm and will include a presentation on the national plans, some background to the plans for Laois so far, and the rest of the time will be dedicated to facilitated workshops where participants will be invited to develop and share their ideas on how the events and people of that time should be commemorated in Laois next year. All are welcome.

Fun Run & Family Day

“No Sweat” Fun Run (5k/10k) & Family Day: is on Saturday, 16th May from 3pm. Registration from 2pm at the Old Boys School or you can register online at: http://www.popupraces.ie/event.php… The route is mainly flat route with some minor hills. There is also a family fun day and the race is open to walkers, joggers & runners of all abilities. Light refreshments will be available to all who partake. The race is to create awareness for a very rare condition called “Ectodermal Dysplasia”. Ectodermal Dysplasia are inherited Disorders that involve defects in the hair, nails, sweat glands, teeth and skin. It is estimated that in every 10,000 births only 7 children will be affected with this condition! There will also be a Fundraiser following the event in Lennon’s Bar, Durrow. Drops of Green will be playing & there will be a BBQ and a Monster Raffle with prizes including 2 tickets to Electric Picnic. Tickets are €10. The Parish lotto with a jackpot of €1,150 was not won. Winner of €30 Donal Deegan, €25, Pat Barnaville, and €20 Joe Costigan. The Lotto of Bank Holiday weekend will be held on May 05 in Mark’s Lennon’s Bar with a possible jackpot of €1,300. All tickets must be handed in before 9.30 pm on the night of the draw to be included in that jackpot.


Durrow/Cullohill Parish Anglers will hold a trout fishing Competition for the Durrow Anglers Cup on Sunday May 03 and on May 31 there will be a pike fishing competition for the C. J. Finnegan Memorial Cup. All members will receive text alerts about each competition in the week prior to the event.


Walk, Cycle or Jog for all the Family on Sunday, 3rd May (Bank Holiday Weekend) commencing at 2pm from The Square, Durrow through Castlewood Farm (where sponsored refreshments will be provided). Registration outside the Copper Kettle at 1.30pm. Adults €5; Children Free. Please come and support this worthy cause!

Enrolment of new pupils for year September 2015 to St. Tighearnachs Primary School, Cullohill is now taking place. Please call to the school office between 9.30 am and 1 pm to get enrolment forms or ring the school at 05787-37281


Forty five pupils from Our Lady’s Meadow Primary School, Durrow and Thirty Tree pupils from St. Tighnearach’s Primary School, Cullohill received the Sacrament of Confirmation in a ceremony held in Most Holy Trinity Church, Durrow under the spiritual guidance of Bishop Seamus Freeman, Bishop of Ossory on Sunday April 19. Each person who received the sacrament is wished well in their life ahead.


Any Ladies wishing to travel to the Ladies VHI Mini-Marathon on the June Bank Holiday Monday are asked to give their name to Marie Clooney as soon as possible so as to book transport to the race.

Late Tom Moore

The death took place in the Midland’s Regional Hospital, Portlaoise on April 02, 2015 after a short Illness of Tom Moore, Tubberboe, Durrow in his eighty year. A member of a highly respected farming family in the parish the late Tom was a lovely man and will be greatly missed by his wife Margaret, family and a large circle of friends and neighbours. Married to Margaret for forty nine years, Tom was a great family man and his sudden passing was a great shock to everyone. He is survived by his wife Margaret, daughters Ailish, Geraldine, Annemarie and son Martin, grandchildren Michelle, Kaarina, Lorraine, Shauna, Stephanie Teresa and Marc, sons-in law Mick and John. The large attendance at his wake in Phelan’s Funeral home, his removal to Church of Most Holy Trinity, Durrow, Requiem Mass and burial was a testament to the high respect everyone had for Tom and to offer to Margaret and the Moore family their heartfelt sympathy at their great loss. Burial took place in adjoining cemetery. May he rest in peace.

Mid Summer Cycle

21st June Mid-Summer Cycle Challenge. The Ten Towns Tour is a 90km cycle starting at 10am from the Square, Durrow, Laois. Registration starts from 9.30am. Fee is €20. There will be a halfway stop at the Wheel Inn, Ballyouskill. A 20km Family Cycle will also be held and starts at 11am from the Square, Durrow, Laois.
