In June Abbeyleix FEC skills group will exhibit a selection of art, woodwork and upholstery. Joseph O’Faoláin will also exhibit in the library in June. Juvenile chess club meets every Saturday morning at 10am. CoderDojo classes are postponed for the summer and will resume in October. Eadrom Art class for 6 to 12 year olds. The next class will take place in June and details will be posted here later. Booking is essential for each class. Ring the library at 057-8730020. Our knitting club has been postponed until the end of summer when the club recommences we will announce it here. Next meeting of our adult book club will be on Thursday June 19 at 6pm. The book is The God of Small People by Arundhati Roy. In late June our annual summer reading challenge for children of primary school age will commence.


The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul are opening a shop on Main Street, Abbeyleix in June. We are accepting donations of clothing, footwear, homewares, books and toys in the shop from 10am to 8pm from Monday to Saturday. These items will then be sold in the store, any profits raised in the shop will be spent on the society’s activities assisting individuals and families in the local community.

Volunteers wanted

If you would like to learn more about the work of SVP and are interested in becoming a volunteer in our Vincent’s charity shop in Abbeyleix, then we’d like to meet you. Why not come along and attend our volunteer recruitment presentation on Thursday June 19 at 7pm in our Vincent’s Charity Shop in Abbeyleix. Light refreshments on arrival. 


Abbeyleix Active Retirement have re-scheduled their tea dance dance for Sunday June 22 at the Manor Hotel from 2pm to 5pm. Music by Reuben James. Entry €10 which included afternoon tea and a free ticket for a door prize. Everybody welcome. We look forward to seeing you.


An ecumenical remembrance service will be held on June 29 in Abbeyleix at 2pm in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church to remember all those who have died in farm accidents. There will be tea and refreshments afterwards in a local hotel with a number of keynote speakers. The event is being organised by Brian and Norma Rohan and is a 32 county event. Monthly meeting was held on Tuesday June 3. Meeting was opened with prayer and My Land. President Pat O’Halloran presided. Votes of sympathy were passed with the Gorman family on the death of Kathleen and also the Thornton family on the death of Gerard. Alice Reilly read the minutes of May meeting. A seat to commemorate 100 years of ICA will be erected shortly. Brown bread competition will take place at federation meeting in Rosenallis on June 25. Walk for Cuisle Centre on June 15 at 2pm, also bring and buy sale. Guild will have an entry for Bernice Dunne Cup at Cloneslee Show on September 7.Meeting ended with supper served by Sadie Chester. Hostess for July Bernie Carroll. Next meeting is July 1 at 8pm. Competition 1 Pat O’Halloran, 2 Nora Carroll and 3 Brenda Dunican. Raffle 1 Bride Reilly and 2 Kathleen Cass.


The Happy Heart Flag Day held in Abbeyleix on Friday May 16 raised €1,202.70. A very sincere thanks to all who contributed so generously, and to the Collectors for their commitment to the cause and their generosity.

Walking festival

Killamuck Bog Abbeyleix. This Failte ireland approved loop features old bog tracks and peaceful wooded lanes. Meet at the Manor Hotel in Abbeyleix on July 14 at 7.30pm. This walk takes two hours and is 10km. Grantstown Lake Ballacolla. This walk includes some quiet roads and laneways with nice countryside views. Meet at Grantstown lake car park at July 11 at 7.30pm.
