The annual Mass at the Mass Pit in Ballyquaid , Ballybrophy was celebrated by Rev Fr Robert Fletcher on Friday evening August 15. In his homily Fr Fletcher spoke of our ancestors and their many achievements which have made life easier for us today. He also spoke of our forefathers from this area who risked their lives and made many sacrifices to attend Mass and hear the word of God during Penal times and who were instrumental in passing on the faith to us. He thanked all who attended, all who took part in the Mass, reader Breda Kavanagh, Eucharistic Ministers Joan Whelan, Tommy Fitzpatrick and Sinead Hennessy, John Kelly and the choir. He complimented the Ballyquaid Mass Pit Committee who prepared the site for the Mass and who have worked hard to develop and preserve this historic place. Fr Fletcher remembered especially and prayed for the late Paddy and Mary Bergin, Ballyquaid, both of whom passed away since last year’s Mass. He also remembered Rev Fr Willie Treacy in Seattle, U.S.A. Fr Willie is a native of Ballyquaid and it was he who first had the idea of restoring the Mass Pit. He con celebrated the first Mass there nine years ago.
