FIDDLESTICKS WALKING PROGRAMME
If you are interested in walking, a very exciting walking programme will be available in the next few weeks. The programme will introduce Nordic walking techniques using walking sticks. The use of the sticks allows the walkers to achieve a 50% increase calorie burn over normal walking, an improved stride length, improved posture and improved stability. The programme will be run out over 4-5 weeks in order to get a good feel for the use of the sticks.
Laois Sports Partnership can facilitate up to 15 people in a group. The class is predominantly held outdoors but there are some indoor elements which can be compleated if required. A great opportunity not to be missed. If you are interested in taking part. Please contact Ann Lanigan Laois Partnership, 087 7749281.
ACORNS SPECIAL OLYMPICS CLUB
We gather once a week, Wednesday evenings at 7pm in the park parish hall. Since we established our badminton club it has gone from strength to strength and we have had great success at Leinster Special Olympics competitions in Newbridge and Portarlington throughout this time. We have now introduced table tennis as an extra sport and we are very fortunate to have recently acquired James Carroll as our table tennis coach. Our equestrian athletes recently attended the Leinster Special Olympics area games. Seven of our athletes participated in these games and came home with six golds, four silver and one bronze. Congratulations to Conor, Alan, Anne, Eimear, Leslie, Elizabeth and Joe.
We work in close contact with both Garret Culliton and Joanne Wall from the Laois Sports Partnership. Their knowledge and support to our club is of extreme importance. We are also delighted to be associated with the Abbeyleix Park Development Association and wish to take this opportunity to thank all members of the committee for their continued support. Special thanks to all who volunteered and supported our National Special Olympics annual collection day. In Abbeyleix we collected €1400. This was a remarkable amount and huge thanks to all involved.
If anyone wishes to become a member, as a volunteer or an athlete you would be more than welcome. Call down and visit us any Wednesday or contact a member of our committee. Secretary Judy Carroll (087 2871703), chairperson Ann O’Hanlon (0578731241).
