Introduction to Olympic handball camp, presented by the Olympic Handball Association of Ireland, will take place in the Owenass Hall, Mountmellick on Tuesday July 17 at 10am. If your child isn’t great with their feet but would love to be involved in team sport, this is wonderful opportunity to get them involved in sport. Please contact Mary on 086 7914933 for details. All ages are welcome. The OHAI representative will assist any adult/group interested in starting their own club.


The Mission Alive Group is holding their annual coffee morning and plant and cake sale on Friday July 13 from 10.30am to 2pm in Fr Noel Dunphy’s house in Sarsfield St. We’re asking all bakers to get their rolling pins and cake tins out please and donate some home baking to our sale. Items can be left in to Fr Dunphy’s house from 9.30am on the morning of the sale. Plants and flowers are also welcome. All proceeds will be sent to an orphan project in Zambia.


The library knitting group has kindly donated a knitted patchwork quilt to the Mission Alive Group which will be raffled on Friday July 13 at the annual coffee morning and cake and plant sale. Last week chairperson Sheelagh Coyle and Fr Noel Dunphy received the quilt from the group in the library.


The bus times for the journey to Knock for Matt Talbot day are as follows. The choir bus will leaves O’Connell square at 9am. The PTAA council bus will leave O’Connell square at 8am with pick up at the old post office in Portlaoise at 8.30am and in the church yard in Mountrath at 9am.


The next two meetings will be on Wednesday July 11 and Wednesday July 25 in the MDA at which payments for the annual September holiday will be collected. This year’s holiday from Sunday September 9 to Friday September 14 will be in White’s Hotel in Wexford. A special bus will bring us to Wexford on the Sunday and back to Mountmellick on Friday.


Artist John Cullen will feature his art work titled ‘Emotional Fish’ in the gallery for the month of July. All are welcome. He will also give a talk and presentation on art on Tuesday July 24 from 6pm to 7.30pm. Booking is essential. Now booking for July activities for children. Contact the library for more details.

The library is setting up a board game club for 10 to12 year olds and if you would like to put your name down, contact the library at 057 8644572. Internet access, printing, photocopying and scanning facilities are available at the library.


Well done to our tag rugby team who progressed to the final of the tournament on Sunday. They were narrowly beaten by a team from Ovens. Congratulations to all involved.

Our club is entering a raft in the annual raft race held by South Tipperary Macra in Golden on Saturday July 14. Contact Eoghan at 086 3976216 for more information. The scouts went on a fun filled day to Lough Key recently. They boarded the bus at 8am in Mountmellick and headed to Roscommon. The day was mixed with activities like the Boda Borg, which is full of puzzles and challenges and Zipit, which is walking on a high wire. They also fitted in a BBQ. On the way home they entertained themselves with a Busco which is a disco in a bus. After a packed day they arrived back home about 10.30 pm. Meetings continuing for another few weeks.


Grupaí cheoil practice for the Leinster Fleadh on July 14 and 15 continues on Tuesdays. Attendance is important at this stage.

Our annual family fun day will take place on Sunday August 5. Come along and join us for an afternoon of craic for kids and adults alike. This year’s highlight will be the introduction of our duck derby. For €5 you can support the boys and girls of the club’s juvenile section by adopting a duck, naming it and entering it into the race. The ducks will be placed into the Triogue river and will race to the finish line with the winner set to receive the top prize of a 2 night stay in the Lakeside Hotel and leisure centre in Killaloe. We hope to see you all there.


Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps provide boys and girls with an action packed and fun filled week of activity during the summer holidays which revolves around maximizing enjoyment and sustaining participant involvement in Gaelic games. Kickboxing and taekwondo classes for all ages from 4yrs upwards are held on Monday, Tuesday and Friday in Mountmellick and Portlaoise. Facilities include punch bags and a boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach and national champion. For details contact 085 1371842.
