It was business as usual when Portlaoise Toastmasters held its first meeting of the year on Monday night. New president, Mark Bastow, warmly welcomed the audience, and particularly the five guests, who attended a meeting for the first time. Both visitors and members alike were treated to a great night’s entertainment. Toastmaster Donal Cahill presided over the meeting and introduced the speakers on the night. The first speech was by Cora Cahill who captivated the audience with her tales of how she plans to overcome her nervousness in public speaking. This was followed by a speech from Mark Bastow, who clearly outlined the different roles and positions within the club. Last, but not least, was prize winning speaker, Meree O’Sullivan, who spoke about a person who had a positive influence on her life, the late Geraldine O’Loughlin. She paid a heartfelt tribute to our sorely missed friend and concluded her speech with the inspirational poem “If I had my life to live over”. Evaluators on the night were Mark Bastow, Mary Heaney and Orlagh McCrory who provided positive feedback to the speakers. Bryan Holland took charge of table topics. The evening concluded with an excellent general evaluation by Ann Duncan. She awarded the Geraldine O’Loughlin Cup to Meree O’Sullivan, whom she deemed to have made the best contribution on the night. Next meeting is on Monday, September 24 at 8pm in the Killeshin Hotel. Guests are very welcome and their first two meetings are free of charge.
