August meeting held on Tuesday September 4. President Pat O Halloran presided. Vote of sympaty with Jena O Loughlin, Rathdowney, on the death of her mother. Lions club thanked all members who donated cake and cash. A walk for heart foundation will take place on September 30. Congratulations to the ladies who will play in all Ireland final in An Grianan on October 11, qualifiers are Pat O Halloran, Caroline Sheil, Mary Hearns, Stella Harking, Maureen Delaney and Breda Delaney. Congratulations to Kathleen Gorman who has been appointed national secretary. Catherine Smith gave feed back on trip to An Grianan. Meeting ended with high tea to celebrate three special birthdays with Bride Reilly, Nora Carroll and Bernie Carroll and two 50th wedding anniversarys with Pat and John O Halloran and Mary and Paddy Carroll. Mary and Fint Coffey celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary, congratulations to all. Hostess on the night was Maureen o Keeffe. Hostess for November Mary Carroll. Competition 1 Violet Rathwell, 2 Pat O Halloran, 3 Kathleen Cass. Raffle 1 Mary Carroll and 2 Sadie Chester.
The hard work of Abbeyleix Tidy towns committee was rewarded when Abbeyleix were declared overall national winners in the Sustainable Development Awards Category. The town also received a silver medal in their category. Abbeyleix had the same score as Abbeyshrule, this year’s winner in the overall approach, the built environment and landscaping. We all need to put our shoulder to the wheel to improve so let’s start planning for 2013.
Heritage House was the venue for the Midlands first model railway club exhibition. The participants were delighted with the huge turnout. Refreshments were provided by Anne Brennan, Heritage House. The exhibition was a very educational experience which captured the imagination of young and old alike.
