One Portlaoise man has taken the initiative to bring the community of Portlaoise together over the Christmas season.
Ger Walsh has set up a Facebook page to encourage people to Brighten up d’Town, by organising artists to paint windows of vacant premises as well as organising some events to compliment the Christmas craft fair taking place in the town in December.
Already almost 500 people have expressed interest in the page, and many are sending messages of support, showing the huge appetite in the area for a community based initiative like this.
As of last Friday it was announced that painting of vacant premises on Main Street would begin this week, and the initiative was successful in contacting building owners.
The public event will be taking place on Sunday December 1 in Hynds Square from 12 noon as part of the Christmas Market. There will be a stage with live music and a seating area. Warm drinks shall also be provided on the day.
People can keep reading Stage Left over the coming weeks to find out more on this event, which is sure to host some of the talented musicians from the town and its surrounds.
Already there has been a successful table quiz which raised €200 for the cause. Ger said on the Facebook page: “Talks with the owners of the units are taking place and, with the help of the Downtown commitee, we should be good to go in the coming weeks”. No doubt there will be a lot of activity in the town over the next few weeks as momentum grows around this popular idea. Those who want to help out and keep updated can do so by visiting the Facebook page for Brighten up d’Town.
