The students and staff at Tobar an Léinn NS in Raheen are working hard towards their fourth Green Flag, which is based on the theme of Travel.
On Tuesday February 18, Mieke Scholte, Travel Education Officer with An Taisce, paid a visit to the school.
In the Infant classroom, she gave a presentation on road safety, and also outlined environmentally-friendly ways of travelling to school such as walking, cycling, or car pooling.
She then played a Snakes and Ladders type game with the children, where they got to advance if they landed on a square which highlighted a low-carbon choice, and had to retreat if the choice was more damaging to the environment. This was very educational and the children enjoyed it.
Ms Scholte also conducted a workshop on the theme of global warming with the pupils in 3rd and 4th class.
This workshop informed the children about fossil fuels, carbon emissions, and what can be done in the future to minimise our carbon footprint.
All those who participated found the experience very useful in increasing their understanding of how our actions regarding the use of fuel can affect the whole planet.
The school hopes to receive its fourth Green Flag for Travel soon.
