Borris-in-Ossory St Vincent De Paul will hold its senior citizens outing on Saturday June 28. The bus will leave Borris-in-Ossory after 10am mass. Anyone interested in going please contact one of the following before June 21, Michael Dollard, Teresa Lalor or Peader King.


Killadooley National School are holding a 5km/10km run/walk and family fun day at Killemeestia Community Field on Sunday June 15.

Registration will be at 11.30am. Run and field events commence at 12.30. Prize Money is available and all are welcome for a fun filled day for all ages. Top Kilkenny hurler will present prizes. Visit www.killadooleyfunruncom for more details.


Borris-in-Ossory Social Services annual outing will take place on Tuesday July 1. The venue this year is Dublin Zoo, with a stop for morning tea/coffee en route and returning to the Gandon Inn for evening meal. Names should be given as soon as possible as there are only a limited number of places on the bus. Anyone wishing to travel should contact Sr Regina at 086 3615701.


The dates for the remaining cemetery masses in the parish are as follows: Wednesday June 11 Knockaroo Cemetery at 7.30pm, Wednesday June 18 Killasmeestia Cemetery at 7.30pm and Wednesday June 25 Skeirke Cemetery at 7.30pm.


The cemetery mass and blessing of graves in Kyle Cemetery will take place on Thursday evening July 3 at 7.30pm.


Her many friends in Borris in Ossory were deeply saddened by the death on Thursday May 29 of Mrs Kathleen Gorman, Ballypickas, Abbeleix. The late Kathleen was a dedicated member of the ICA and at the time of her death she was the national secretary. She visited Borris in Ossory on many occasions and members will have fond memories of the guild’s 50th anniversary in 2011. Kathleen was Laois federation president at the time and she attended the celebrations in Borris in Ossory. She was a woman full of community spirit and was involved in numerous voluntary organisations and fundraising groups in County Laois.

Her funeral mass was celebrated on Sunday June 1 in St Lazarians Church, Knock followed by burial in St Brigid’s Cemetery, Ballinakill. At the end of mass Liz Wall ICA national president paid a tribute to Kathleen and several members of Borris in Ossory ICA guild joined with ICA members from all parts of Ireland to form a guard of honour as her remains left the church.

Sincere sympathy is extended to her husband Billy, daughter Annemarie, sons Liam, Cathal and Padraig, brother Jack, sister Elizabeth, extendedfamily, relatives andfriends.


The last meeting of Borris-in-Ossory ICA guild took place on Wednesday June 4, presided over by Helen Browne. A vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Kathleen Gorman, ICA national secretary who passed away on May 29 and tributes were paid to Kathleen.

A new member Carol Sinnott was welcomed to the guild. Arrangements were made for seven members to attend the Federation meeting in Rosenallis on June 25. The guild is organising a weekend away to Devon and Cornwell in Southern England in September. The dates will be confirmed in the next week and deposits will then be due.

Guest speaker at the meeting was Vicky Houlihan who gave a very interesting talk on aloe vera health and beauty products. The competition for the nicest single rose was won by Stella Kealy, 2nd Pat Kelly, 3rd Mary Sheeran and the raffle winners were Mary Sheeran and Margaret Shortiss. The competition at next month’s meeting will be the best boiled fruitcake.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday July 2 and this will be the last meeting before the summer break and so the members have decided to finish the season with a party. The meeting will be held in the O’Brien Hall at 3pm in the afternoon and this will be followed by a sit down meal next door in St Canices Hall. All members of the guild are invited to come along and join in the party.


The death took place on Wednesday May 28 at the Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise of Patrick (Paddy) Kilmartin, The Derries, Borris-in-Ossory, Co. Laois. His remains reposed at the Monastery Chapel, Castletown, Mountrath until removal on Friday evening to St Fergal’s Church, Camross. Following funeral mass on Saturday burial took place immediately afterwards in St Fergal’s Cemetery, Camross. The late Paddy is deeply regretted by his wife Mary and family Seamus, Catherine and Michael, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, nieces, nephew, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.


The next meeting of the gardening group will be on this Thursday June 12 in St Canices Hall at 8pm. Everyone is welcome to attend to get loads of tips to improve the garden.

The country markets started in Borris-in-Ossory with great energy in 2012 and provided a community activity in the centre of the town every Saturday morning since then. Customers were welcomed with complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits. The country market wishes to thank all the loyal customers for their support but sadly there were not enough of them. The market has now closed down for the summer but may return in the autumn.


The Ossory Agricultural Show takes place on Sunday July 27 at the Showgrounds, Coolfin Cross, Mountrath Road, Rathdowney. There will be classes in cattle, sheep, horses, poultry, eggs, jam, home baking, arts, crafts, vegetables, produce, flowers and photography, and also junior classes.
