Condolences to the family of the late Kathleen Gorman (née O Shea) of Ballypickas, Abbeyleix who died on May 29. National Secretary of the ICA and ex St Fintan’s Hospital, Portlaoise. Deeply regretted by her husband Billy, daughter Annemarie, sons Liam, Cathal and Padraig, brother Jack, sister Elizabeth, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at her residence with removal on Saturday evening at 6pm to St Lazarians Church, Knock for funeral mass in St Brigid’s Cemetery, Ballinakill. Donations if desired to Cuisle Centre, Portlaoise.

Abbeyleix Library

In June Abbeyleix FEC skills group will exhibit a selection of art, woodwork and upholstery. Joseph O’Faoláin will also exhibit in the library in June. Juvenile Chess Club meets every Saturday morning at 10am. CoderDojo classes are postponed for the summer and will resume in October. Eadrom Art class for 6 to 12 year olds. The next class will take place in June and details will be posted here later. Booking is essential for each class. Ring the library at 057-8730020. Our Knitting Club has been postponed until the end of summer when the club recommences we will announce it here. Next meeting of our Adult Book Club will be on Thursday June 19 at 6pm. The Book is The God of Small People’ by Arundhati Roy. In late June our annual Summer Reading Challenge for children of primary school age will commence.


The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul are opening a shop on Main Street, Abbeyleix in June. We are accepting donations of clothing, footwear, homewares, books and toys in the shop from 10am to 8pm from Monday to Saturday. These items will then be sold in the store, any profits raised in the shop will be spent on the society’s activities assisting individuals and families in the local community. We are also seeking volunteers to assist in the shop, people willing to volunteer can leave their details into the shop also. Thanking everyone in advance for their continued support.


Abbeyleix Active Retirement have re-scheduled their tea dance dance for Sunday June 22 at the Manor Hotel from 2pm to 5pm. Music by Reuben James. Entry €10 which included afternoon tea and a free ticket for a door prize. Everybody welcome. We look forward to seeing you.


An ecumenical remembrance service will be held on June 29 in Abbeyleix at 2pm in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church to remember all those who have died in farm accidents. There will be tea and refreshments afterwards in a local hotel with a number of keynote speakers. The event is being organised by Brian and Norma Rohan and is a 32 county event.
