Ballacolla Tidy Towns jackpot of €4,000 was not won on Monday October 20 Numbers drawn were 10,12,19,23 Jackpot October 27 4200. Winners of €25: Billy Davin, Oonagh Maher, Sean Lowrey, Will Meade, Sean Dunne. Tickets on sale in Hawthorn Glanbia or from Committie Members. All support welcome.

Woodenbridge paddlers

October saw launch of the Woodenbridge Paddlers new floating pontoon and changing room at the Woodenbridge Ballacolla. The official launch was performed by Valery Case of Laois Water Safety. The new floating pontoon which will be of huge value to all river users in the area was part funded by IPB and erected by Oldtown Construction. Oldtown Construction also sponsored the new changing room this is also a huge asset to the club who attract many youth and scout groups from around the area and beyond including exchange students fron overseas as well as the regular members.An access area was also developed with the help of the Tús programme. The launch was attended by over two hundred people and attracted the interest of Irish TV who covered the event which will be shown on sky channel 191 in the coming weeks.

The Paddlers also held a regatta which included a tug-o-war. Regatta winners: U-10 Adam Shirley; U-14 Padraig Walsh; U-18 Jack Thompson. mothers Alissa Blundell, senior Michael G Phelan.


Once a month during the winter, a group of Laois volunteers spend Sunday morning at the Durrow Curragh in the south of the county recording bird numbers as part of the Irish Wetland Bird Survey (IWeBS). At the next meeting of the Laois branch of BirdWatchIreland, wetland bird expert Helen Boland will speak about IWeBS, and also about the International Swan Census, which takes place this year.

The meeting will be at the Portlaoise Parish Centre on Tuesday 28 October at 8pm. The talk is open to everyone with an interest in wildlife. Entry is free but all contributions are welcome.
