The annual Christmas carol service in St Canice’s Church, Borris in Ossory took place on Sunday night December 21 and was a great success. The carol service featured members of the four choirs in the parish, members of the parish church orchestra and soloists Erin Dollard, Damien Bowe, Mark Fahy, Martin Delaney Snr and Martin Delaney Jnr. Children from the local parish primary schools also took part, all under the baton of musical director Patricia Scott.

At the end of the carol service, Fr Jackie Robinson gave a special Christmas blessing to all present and thanked everyone who took part and everyone who came along. He had special praise for musical director Patricia Scott who gave so much of her time, energy and commitment to ensure the success of the event and also thanked all who attended the rehearsals in the weeks leading up to the service .


Borris in Ossory ICA Guild wishes to thank all who supported their Christmas fair/bring and buy sale on Saturday December 6. Borris-in-Ossory ICA guild will hold the first meeting of the New Year on this Wednesday night January 7 at 8pm.


Borris in Ossory ICA hope to start a course of armchair pilates on Wednesday January 14 in St Canice’s Hall which will run for six weeks. Anyone interested in taking part should contact any ICA member.

Borris-in-Ossory DVD

A DVD of Borris-In-Ossory parish was officially launched by Rev. Fr Jackie Robinson PP on Thursday June 19 last at a function in Racket Hall Hotel Roscrea. This DVD which has been compiled and recorded over the last two years by Noel Sheridan and Terence Smeaton contains footage of all sections, happenings and clubs of the local Community. Included on the DVD are recordings of traditional music groups, individual singers, Community Development/Employment Association, school choirs, Borris-In-Ossory & Rushall Coursing Club, Social Services Committee, ICA guilds, Borris-In-Ossory GAA senior championship winning teams 1956 & 1972, Borris-In-Ossory/Kilcotton U21 championship winning team 2013, dancing groups, shops/business premises, Borris-In-Ossory Youth Club and many more groups and individuals. This is a fantastic record of all happenings in Borris-In-Ossory and will be a collector’s item in years to come. Borris-In-Ossory Badminton Club took a break for Christmas and recommenced on Monday January 5 at 8pm in St Joseph’s School Hall. New members always welcome - come in and give it a try.


Sympathy is extended to the Treacy family, Rathmore, Ballybrophy on the death of Mary Birney (nee Treacy), the Glebe Road, Rossnaclonagh, Coolrain, Co. Laois, Her death took place on Saturday December 13, 2014, unexpectedly. The late Mary is deeply regretted by her family and friends.

Her remains reposed at her home until removal on Thursday to Killasmeestia Church for requiem mass followed by burial in Derrinsallagh Cemetery, Borris in Ossory. May she rest in peace.

Please note there are still a number of copies of the history of Borris in Ossory parish ‘Viewing Through History’ available and now at reduced price of €50 for the two volumes.

This is an excellent publication and would be great for families to have and pass on and keep the history of the parish alive to pass down the generations.

The Laois GAA Records Bible

A new publication will now be launched in March 2015. This publication will cover all finals in all grades hurling and football including all underage finals, since start of GAA in Laois and has a chapter on club and Railway Cup and inter county games. It is also hoped to have a chapter each on camogie and ladies football. It will have all team listings of finalists in all competitions including their correct Christian names. It will be a must for GAA clubs and historians alike and it will be a very limited number so please watch out for the launch night to make sure of your copy.
