The annual Mass at the Mass Pit in Ballyquaid, Ballybrophy will be celebrated on Sunday evening August 16 at 7.30pm. This ancient and historic place of worship was restored ten years ago and the annual Mass serves to remind us of the sacrifices and risks made by our ancestors in order to attend Mass during Penal times.

Please note that there will be no morning Mass in Killasmeestia Church on that Sunday.

A group of Borris in Ossory ICA members and their friends travelled on the Laois Federation holiday to West Cork recently. The group stayed at the West Lodge Hotel, Bantry and enjoyed lovely weather for the duration of the trip. Included on the itinerary were visits to Glengarriff, Garnish Island, Castletownbeare and the Beara Peninsula. The ladies also visited Gougane Barra and had a guided tour of Bantry House. Thanks is extended to Noreen Byrne and Betty Gorman who organised the trip and thanks also to Sas and Mary, the driver and guide from Glasheen coaches.

The Open Day in the gardens of Gortnalee House was a great success with people coming from far and near to see this garden and to support Laois Hospice Foundation. People came from as far away as Donegal, Clare, Cork and Dublin to mention but a few. Local people turned out in force too so the day was very successful. It was lovely to see little groups of people wandering around the many little paths in the garden.

Over the “cuppa” new friendships were made and old friendships renewed. People went home with new plants for their own gardens and got advice on how to treat them! Hazel Glennon, owner of the garden wishes to extend her sincere thanks to all who helped to make the event such a success – whether it was baking cakes, donating plants for the plant sale, organising seating, manning the car park, making tea, looking after the plant sales etc.
