Sheppard Auction House is sponsoring an Antiques Valuation Day for charity on the Green in Durrow on Saturday June 9 from 2.30 to 5 pm. some of Irelands leading antique specialists will be on hand to value precious items or family heirlooms for members of the public. People are encouraged to bring along sports memorabilia such as medals or minute books from meetings if they have them. There will also be experts in jewellery, Chinese ceramics and maps among others. The day which is also a fundraiser for the Jack and Jill foundation will include fun for kids with free entertainment, ice-cream etc. Durrow Development Forum, local businesses and clubs are very supportive of this day. Do come along and it you feel like getting into the spirit of the day come dressed in vintage clothes. A competition will take place for the best dressed.

Eucharist Congress Procession

A procession will be held in Durrow on Sunday June 10 after 11 am mass weather permitting to mark the opening of the Eucharistic Congress in Dublin. The Blessed sacrament will be carried from the Church to the Square and back similar to Corpus Christi precessions of old. It is hoped that everybody including parents and children will participate and First Communion children are especially welcome.

Durrow Community Services

Summer Arts Programme

The Arts Office of Laois County Council will run a series of Art workshops for Children and young people as part of the 2012 Summer Arts Programme. Projects are selected from proposals designed and submitted by a panel of artists. The aim of the programme is to inspire

imagination and self expression with a world of hands-on art activities. Through painting, sculpture, dance, music, drawing, pottery, dramatic play and much more, our classes encourage confidence and support artistic potential. This quality arts programme will run in the month of July for two hours Monday to Friday. Weekly courses cost 30 Euro with a reduction for family members. Ages range from 7 to 15 years, we cater for up to twenty in a group but this may vary according to the type of arts activity. This will be held in Durrow this July. Scarecrow Festival

The All-Ireland Scarecrow Festival will take place from July 28 to August 6. Plans are already in place for this years Festival. Tell all family and friends to keep these dates free to visit Durrow and witness this spectacular event. There is 1000 euro up for grab this year for first prize.

South Laois Tourism

Uachtaran Chumann Luthchleas Gael Liam O’Neill will officially launch South Laois Cycle Trail on Sunday June 17 at 11 am from the South Laois Tourism office at the Castle Arms Hotel Durrow. Five Routes ranging from 48.48 km to 8.16km which have been developed by South Laois Tourism in conjunction with Laois Partnership, Laois County Council and Failte Ireland are the first ever cycle trails to be launched in County Laois. With many families in the locality bereaved by suicide it is important that you meet people with the same problem. Meeting people bereaved by suicide will take place in Villa Maria, Freshford Road , Kilkenny on Thursday night June 7 at 8 pm , all are welcome. If you are interested or maybe affected do please come along it will be of great help and comfort.

Fun Day

Durrow/Cullohill Parish Anglers in conjunction with the Wooden Bridge Paddlers held a very successful Fun Day at the Bridge on Sunday May 27 . Valerie Case of Laois Water Safety gave a talk on water safety and the young people were shown how to fish and to paddle a canoe. Members also did a High Nellie cycle to Abbeyleix and back. A special word of thanks to Betty Walsh and David Walsh for all the money they collected. A total of 1,960 euro was collected on the day and a big thank you to all who supported this fund raising adventure. A proceeds will be presented in the coming weeks.
