Port GIY and Port Family GIY will meet at the allotments on Saturday June 9 at 11am. We will be taking a look at the site offered by the allotments Committee for GIY to use. We will be planning what to do with it - fruit, veg, hens, compost, bees, herbs, polytunnel - all ideas welcome. The allotments are on the corner of the Ballymorris and Canal roads. The entrance is on the Ballymorris Road, gates to the left just past the railway bridge on the way out of town. Everyone interested in growing their own food welcome. Bring the family. Portarlington Active Retirement Association/Happy Hearts Club would like to thank all those who supported their craft exhibition and sale on Thursday May 24 in the community centre. It was a very successful and enjoyable occasion. Raffle winners were Lar Dowling, Mary Dowling, Brenda Jervis, Kathleen Bambrick, Glady’s Watchorn, Mary Ryan, Mary Pollard.


A very happy 80th birthday to Jack Kenny, Station Rd who celebrated his big day on last Friday June 1. Jack has always been a very active man in the community, and still is involved on many committees in the town. Jack moved to Portarlington in 1967 from Cloughan, Co. Offaly to work in the power station. Jack was surrounded for his birthday by his wife Eithne, his ten children, 16 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and his extended family and many friends. Wishing Jack many more years of good health.

Alan Mitchell and Eoin O’Neill will take to the River Barrow from Portarlington to Waterford on Friday June 8 to Sunday June 10. This is in aid of a local Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.


Maryellen Brennan and Pauline Stapleton are doing a sponsored parachute jump in Clonbullogue on Sunday June 17 at 9.30am. Maryellen’s husband Jim was originally to do the jump with her, but due to recent health problems, he will not be allowed. So their next door neighbour Pauline Stapleton decided to do the jump with Maryellen. Sponsorship cards are out. Proceeds are going to MS Ireland and Port Dirty Old Towns/Tidy Towns projects. This year’s annual 10K run will be organised by St Michael’s AC and will take place on September 16. This year’s run will be called The King and Queens 10k fun run and will circle the town in both Offaly (the King’s County) and Laois (the Queen’s County). This event will replace the previously named Port 10k. This year’s run will also host a juvenile run.  In preparation for this year’s 10k run everyone is welcome to a registration evening on June 28 at 8pm in the GAA Centre/ McCann Park Portarlington. The registration evening is organised to provide a 10 week meet and train programme. Cost of the 10 week programme is €50.  5K RUN

Friday May 25 was one exciting and apprehensive day for students and staff in Coláiste Íosagáin. After weeks of training all the participants were putting their fitness to the test around the streets of Portarlington for the school’s first ever 5K fun run. Proceeds from this event went to the Lisa Bracken fund, who is a former pupil. Well done to all involved. Results of the race are as follows: 1st senior boy Evan Clancy. 1st junior boy Sean McLoughlin. 1st senior girl Libby Waldron. 1st junior girl Claire Faherty. Valerie Moore on behalf of Oakdale Nursing Home presented the cup to the winner. The PE department in Coláiste Íosagáin would like to thank their many sponsors.
