Jack Carter talks about Laois

Dr. Jack Carter will give a talk on the built and natural heritage of Laois and the evictions at Luggacurren at the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise, on Thursday, 17 October, at 8pm. This is part of the Autumn programme of talks organised by Laois Heritage Society. Dr. Carter is a well-known historian and author. All are welcome and admission is free.

The AGM was held on September 25. The outgoing president, Carmel Doorley, thanked the officers, committee and members of the club for their support during her year. The incoming president,Anne Mulligan,congratulated Carmel,on a very successful and enjoyable year’s bridge.She wished everyone all the best for the coming bridge season. The following officers and committee were elected: President: Anne Mulligan,Vice President: Mary Killeen, Secretary:Lena Kelly, Treasurer:Caroline Delaney, pro:Anne Doolan,Outgoing president: Carmel Doorley. Sessions are held every Monday and Thursday evenings, in the Sue Ryder Centre, Kilminchy , commencing at 7.30pm sharp.

Youth cafe

6th Class Club at the Portlaoise Youth Café every Thursday after school from 4 - 6pm, for all 10-12 year old primary school students. Fully supervised by volunteers trained in child protection and garda vetted. Admission €1 and a parental consent form must be completed. Parish Lotto

There was no winner of the Portlaoise Parish lotto jackpot when numbers were drawn on October 3. Numbers: 8,14,18,26. The match 6 winners won €167 each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.

Mental health talks

GROW to host ‘Mental Wellbeing & Suicide Prevention’ 5 talks in Portlaoise entitled ‘Gatekeepers: Community Mental Health Promotion Programme’ from Tuesday, October 8 7.30 - 9.30pm and each Tuesday at the same time in the Treo Nua, Harpur’s Lane, All talks are free and open to the general public. Co-hosted by he HSE.

The Laois branch of the National Parents Council (NPC) Primary is holding an anti-bullying meeting at the Portlaoise Parish Centre on Wednesday, October 9, 7.30pm – 9.30pm. Confirm place by email. Late Jean Conroy

Condolences to the family of the late Jean Conroy (née Dignon) of Mill View, Portlaoise,who died on September 27 peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife of Bernie and dearly loved mother to Sheena, Kieran, Terry, and Iain also deeply regretted by brother Hugh extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at her sons residence at Oaklawn, Ballyfin Rd. Removal to SS Peter and Pauls Church followed by interment in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery. Late Tomás MULCAHY

Condolences to the family of the late Tomás Mulcahy (8 Cherrygarth, Portlaoise, Druncondra, Dublin and late of Dolla, Nenagh) who died on October 2, (peacefully), at home, following a short illness. Deeply regretted by his loving parents Tom and Anne, sister Deirdre, brother Brian, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at his home in Cherrygarth with removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church for Funeral Mass followed by Burial in Lisboney New Cemetery, Nenagh. Donations if desired to Laois Hospice.

Condolences to the family of the late Mary Ryan of The Downs, Portlaoise who died suddenly at her residence on Sept 29. Mary, beloved daughter of Frances and the late Liam and loving mother to Rassul, Karim and Shirim and sister to Cathy, Pauline, and Olive. Deeply regretted by her loving family, relatives and friends. Reposed at the Chapel of Rest, Portlaoise Regional Hospital with removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church for Requiem Mass with interment afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Portlaoise.
