Bog Walks

Weekly guided walks on the bog on Saturday mornings. Assemble at the Manor Hotel car park at 10.45 am. Parts of the walk are mucky at present so suitable wear suitable footwear.


Laois week at An Grianán June 16 – 20, two members will attend. Centenary dinner dance in Abbeyleix Golf Club on Friday, February 28 at 7.30pm with music by Har Ramsbottom. Tickets from any ICA member. Members will attend table quiz in Spink. Next meeting March 4 at 8pm.

St Patrick’s Day

The Abbeyleix St Patricks Day parade takes on Monday, March 17. Starts at the Heritage House at 12.30pm finishes at the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel. To put a float or stall into the parade or on the street contact Caroline Cleland of Clelands Supermarkets.


Abbeyleix Business & Community Development Forum AGM will take place on Monday, March 3. All welcome.

Congrats Heritage House

Well done to Abbeyleix Heritage House on winnning a major national award for their excellent children’s archaeology event during Heritage Week last year - congratulations to Sinead, Richard and the Board and all who made that happen. Like their Facebook page to keep an eye out for their plans for Heritage Week this year - more great things to come!

St Brigid

A lecture on the origins of St Brigid and the influence of the Brigidine Order’s influence on education in Laois will be held on Wednesday, February 26 at 8pm in the Heritage House, Abbeyleix. Contact 057 873 1653.

Abbeyleix Library

Juvenile Chess Club meets every Saturday morning at 10am. Storytelling on Saturdays will not take place until further notice. Eadrom Art class for 6 to 12 year olds takes place between 11-12pm on Saturday March 8. Booking essential. Ring the library at 057-8730020. Note: Storytelling will not take place on the date Eadrom takes place.

Our Knitting Club takes place each Wednesday between 10.30 and 12.30pm. Next meeting of our Adult Book Club will take place in late March. The book title is ‘The Age of Innocence’ by Edith Wharton. Janet O’Grady, Happy Mondays Group will exhibit until March 1. From March 4 to April 1 Trudi Killeen will display a millinery exhibition. On March 13 we hope to hold a Seachtain na Gaeilge event with the Ceolamhtas group from Spink.


Condolences to the family of the late Richard Lalor of Portlaoise Road, Abbeyleix and Clashmore, Waterford who died on February 9 last. Retired publican, Richard is deeply regretted by his loving wife Maureen, sons Christopher and Tony, daughters Martina and Maria, brothers, sisters, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at his residence. Removal to The Church of The Most Holy Rosary, Abbeyleix, for Requiem Mass. Interment afterwards in Shanahoe Cemetery. Donations if desired to the Irish Cancer Society.


Conodolences to the family of the late Eleanor Thorton (née SHEERAN) of Ballinakill Rd, Abbeyleix and formerly of Watercastle, Durrow who died on February 15 in the care of Brookhaven Nursing Home, Ballyragget. Wife of the late Joe, Eleanor is deeply regretted by her loving sons Gerard and Edmund, extended family, neighbours and friends. Reposing at Brookhaven Nursing Home. Removal to The Church Of The Most Holy Rosary, Abbeyleix for Requiem Mass. Interment afterwards in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
