Christmas Concert

Christmas Concert

There will soon be two opportunities to see and hear the Sing for Joy choir, directed by Maureen Culleton, perform Christmas favourites, on Wednesday Dec 3 in St Fintan’s Church in the grounds of St Fintan’s Hospital and on Wednesday, Dec 10 in The Parish Centre, Portlaoise both at 11am. Adms free all welcome.

Portlaoise Tidy Towns

Portlaoise Tidy Towns committee annual Tidy Estate Awards night in Laois County Council chamber on Wednesday, December 10 at 7.30pm. All residents will be notified in advance. The local committee travels to Co Meath on December 3 to collect its fourth silver medal in the national Tidy Towns Awards.

Tree & Crib

The St Joseph’s Accordion Band members who erect the Christmas trees and crib each year will switch on the lights and crib at Our Ladies Shrine on Market Square on Friday, December 5 at 8pm. Santa and and his elves will be there. Dick Sydes, President of St Joseph’s Accordion Band will officially switch on the lights.

Christmas trees

The annual charity sale of Christmas trees in aid of Laois Hospice and the Portlaoise Lions Club gets underway on Saturday, December 6 at Centrepoint, Mountrath Road. Mon-Fri 10.30am-5pm, Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 2-5pm.

Portlaoise Seniors

Portlaoise Senior Citizen Dinner takes place on January 4 in the Manor Hotel, Abbeyleix. Tickets €10pa will be on sale every Tuesday and Thursday morning at the Parish Centre after 10am mass starting Tuesday, December 2.

Concern fast

Concern Christmas Fast takes place on November 27-29. Fundraising includes collection from local business, whist drive in St Fintan’s Hospital December 2, coffee morning in the Parish Centre on December 4 after 10am mass Portlaoise. Well done to local Concern Volunteers who presented a cheque for €21,410 to the charity last week.

Portlaoise Panto

Portlaoise Pantomime Group will present their 31 have announced that the annual Production Mother Goose in the Dunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise from January 24-31. As in previous years with their reputation for hugely entertaining productions of song, dance, comedy and laughter for all ages this year should be no exception. Portlaoise Singers

The Portlaoise Singers have been entertaining local audiences now for 40 years. In fact they will be holding their 40th Christmas concert on Sunday, December 14 in the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel.

St Vincent De Paul

From Monday, December 1 non perishable foods and toiletries may be left into the Parish Centre for redistribution over for Christmas via the St Vincent De Paul Hamper. Items may also be left in on Thursday night, December 4 when a thanksgiving service and blessing of food donations will be held in the parish church at 7pm.

The Portlaoise shop has relocated due to refurbishments to our Dublin Road premises to 97 Main Street from November 17. Apologies for any inconvenience caused donations of clothing etc can be left at the above address during opening hours.

Parish Pilgrimage

Portlaoise parish pilgrimage to the Holy Land in celebration of the 50th anniversary of SS Peter & Paul’s Church takes place from September 16-25 next year. Spiritual director Msgr John Byrne PP. No jackpot winner in the Portlaoise Parish Community Lotto for Thursday, November 27. Numbers: 3,4,10,26. The match 3s won €53 each. No Jackpot Winner of €20,000. Next week’s jackpot is €20,000.

Heritage Society

Late Angela HYLAND

Condolences to the family of the late Angela Hyland of 17 Clonrooske View, Portlaoise, Laois / Mountmellick formerly of Mountmellick. Beloved sister of the late Mary Santry, Mountmellick, Angela died peacefully in the loving care of her niece, Patricia Mulhall. Funeral mass at SS Peter & Paul’s Church followed by burial after in SS Peter & Paul’s Cemetery.

Late Francis Tyrell Jnr

Condolences to the family of the late Francis Tyrell (jnr) of Ard Na Greine, Knock Road, Roscrea/ Portlaoise who died on November 25. Deeply regretted by his loving parents Francis (Frank) & Ann, sister Emma, brother-in-law Joga, Jessica, children Jayden, Kai & Jodie, relatives and large circle of friends. Reposed in Maher’s Funeral Home, Roscrea. Removal to St. Cronan’s Church, Roscrea for Funeral Mass. Burial afterwards in the adjoining new cemetery.
