An art expo takes place on Thursday August 2 in Abbeyleix Library in aid of the Hope Foundation, homeless children of Calcutta. The expedition starts at 6 and ends at 7.30pm and all welcome.

Tidy Towns are appealing for volunteers for the weekly clean-up which has been very poorly attended for a number of weeks. The work of Tidy Towns is on-going and requires much time and effort to maintain the high standard we have achieved to date. If you have free time the Tidy Towns committee would very much appreciate your support. You can come along to the weekly clean-up Tuesday nights or a night of your choice from 7pm. Laois Community Forum will host Laois’ first ever Countywide Mental Health Awareness week 2012, which will take place from September 15 - 22. The awareness week is to hightlight the importance of taking care of our own mental health. The week long event will include talks and seminars on issues relating to good mental health. Key speakers will take part in many seminars and workshops around Laois and will include activities such as yoga, walks, meditation and art therapy. A full programme of events is available on


A grant is available for Community Alert groups who wish to avail of the Community Alert Rapid Texting Systems. Groups must be established in order to be eligible to apply, evidence must be supplied i.e signed minutes of meetings/constitution. The grant will be spread over the five electoral areas and grant will be allocated on a first come first served service basis. Abbeyleix bog restoration committee are holding a picnic on the bog and giving a guided tour on Saturday August 11 at 11am to celebrate National Heritage Week. A family fun day is guaranteed and light snacks will be available on the day.

The event will also give people an opportunity to use the recently launched loop walk on the bog which was funded by Failte Ireland.
