Christmas Carols by the Pupils of Maryborough NS on Wednesday 19th December 2012 from 1pm to 1.45pm in Portlaoise Library. All are welcome.


Portlaoise Parish is hosting a Live Crib at SS Peter and Paul’s Parish Church from Saturday, December 22 from 4pm to Sunday, December 23 at 2pm. The Parish is grateful to Macra na Feirme, the Parish Youth Group for making the crib possible.

Free weekend parking in Portlaoise for December has been confirmed by Laois County Council. There is no free parking on double yellow lines or disabled spaces only in the normal parking bays.


The 50th annual Portlaoise senior citizens Christmas party takes place in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel on Sunday, January 6 at 2pm. Portlaoise Parish only. age 60+. The Portlaoise Senior Citizens Committee looks forward to the pleasure of your company.

Jack and the Beanstalk

Portlaoise Pantomime Group will present their 29th annual production “Jack and the Beanstalk” in the Dunamaise Arts Centre Portlaoise. The panto runs in January from 19-26. Matinees on Saturday 19, Sunday, 20, and Saturday 26 at 2.30pm. Shows nightly at 8pm. in the Dunamaise Arts Centre. Tickets are now available from the Dunamaise Box Office. Christmas monster bingo takes place on Sunday, December 30 at St Mary’s Hall from 3pm. €5,000 in prize money.


The public is urged to hang a Christmas Bow the Portlaoise Rotary Club’s Christmas Tree of Rememberance at the Kyle Shopping Centre up to December 24.


Specsavers, Lyster Lane, Portlaoise is holding a Christmas Coffee Morning in aid of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind on Wednesday, December 19 at 10am - 12pm. Please call in and support this worthy cause.


The Portlaoise Gospel Choir will sing on Sunday, December 23 in Shaen Hospital from 1.30-2.30 pm and in the Kyle shopping centre from 3-6pm. At 8pm the choir will participate in a carol service along with other choirs at St Peter and Pauls parish Church Portlaoise.


Mothercare Portlaoise will continue to accept donations up until December 20 for St Vincent de Paul Toy Appeal.

Christmas Comedy Night

Portlaoise GAA Christmas comedy night Thursday, December 20 in Portlaoise GAA centre at 8:30pm. Tickets €10 available from committee members.

Daredevils Foroige

The daredevils Foroige held their weekly meeting in the Macra Hall last Friday night where they had a display by the k - 9 unit from the prison service. The unit spoke to the members about how the unit works then they show how searchs are carried out. Everyone said they enjoyed it. The committee would like to thank all involved for a great night.


Tickets on sale from all our members for Christmas raffle 1st prize luxury hamper 2nd brandy and chocolates 3rd wine and biscuits draw takes place at The Sue Ryder Centre on Friday December 21 at 8.30pm tickets €2 each.


There was no winner of the Portlaoise Parish lotto jackpot when the numbers were drawn on Thursday, December 13. The numbers drawn were 11,13,21,23 The 21 match 3s received €48 each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.


The public is also asked to support the Superquinn Cuisle Centre appeal. Volunteers needed to sell Christmas cards at the Shopping Centre. Contact 868 1492.

Portlaoise Pioneers

Would like to say a big “thanks” to Sean O’Neill and Sarah Langley who spoke to the confirmation Classes on Friday last about the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association. Also thanks to the speakers who spoke at the Confirmation First Friday Mass. Due to unforeseen circumstances Ross Munnelly, Laois Footballer was unable to attend the Mass, however, it is hoped that Ross will call to the schools in the New Year to speak to the Confirmation candidates.


Congrats to all the estates, groups, indivuals and businesses which were recognised in the annual Portlaoise Tidy Towns competion and to all who entered.

Laois Guide Dogs would like to thank the Portlaoise/Abbeyleix Lions Club for raising €3,175 through an Open Day in the Abbeyleix Garden Estate and also the Electric Picnic Residents for their donation of €1,000. All funds raised in Laois have helped to replace two Guide Dogs who have recently retired after working for the last 8 years, it costs €38,000 to train and support a Guide Dog so we thank you all for your generosity. Condolences to the family of the late Elizabeth (Betty) Whelan late of 77 Cherrygrove, who passed away at Portlaoise Regional Hospital, on December 8. Reposed at the hospital mortuary with removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Parish Church for Requiem Mass. Followed by burial in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.


There will be no Portlaoise local notes in the Leinster Express until the edition of Tuesday, January 8. The deadline for that edition is Friday, January 4.
