Portlaoise ICA Sue Ryder Center held its montly meeting on September 4, President Sharon o Connell welcomed three new members. Josie and Breda were hostess’s for tea’s. Competition for the group was won, winners were: Breda, Caroline, Maureen, Stella. Next months competition is autumn scene, photograph. Next meeting October 2 at 8pm in Sue Ryder, Kilminchy. All new members welcome.

Portlaoise lions

After the success of last years indoor static car show held in Portlaoise, the Ballinakill Vintage and Classic Car Owners Club have decided to run this charity event again on the Sunday of the October Bank Holiday between 11am and 4.30pm. Launched last week the event will be held a the Laois Shopping Centre Portlaoise. Funds raised will go to the Portlaoise Lions Club.

Parish Lotto

There was no winner of the Portlaoise Parish lotto jackpot when numbers were drawn on September 19. Numbers: ,,,. The match 3 winners won € each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.

Summer reading

Portlaoise Library Summer Reading Challenge is over. The Library would like thank all the children who took part this year. Youth cafe

6th Class Club @ Portlaoise Youth Café is now open for 2013. The 6th Class club is held every Thursday after school from 4-6pm, for all 10-12 year old primary school students in 6th class. The Café members are fully supervised by volunteers who are trained in Child Protection and are garda vetted. Youth Work Ireland says it is a safe and fun place for 10-12 year olds to mix socially with new friends of their own age. The Café is equipped with board games, pool tables, ping pong, air hockey, PS3, Wii, X-Box and computers and also a tuck shop available on site. Admission fee is €1 and a parental consent form must be completed to join.

Kidney Assoc Sale

The Laois Branch of the Irish Kidney Association is holding a fundraising sale on October 3rd,4th and 5th at Bull Lane Portlaoise (previous Hibernian Insurance Office. Yellow building near Xtra. Vision.) Many gardening and cookery books will be on sale together with good quality soft toys and bric-a-brac. Home-baked cakes will be on sale also on Fri 4th. All proceeds go to the IKA in Laois to help local patients who have end stage kidney disease. support will be greatly appreciated.

The Laois branch of BirdWatch Ireland meets at 8pm on Wednesday 25 September at the Portlaoise Parish Centre. This month’s meeting features welcome Dave Suddaby, BirdWatch Ireland’s Reserves Manager, who will talk on Nature Reserves. On Friday 27 September a group of members are travelling to Cape Clear for the weekend to study Autumn migration. Details at Wednesday night’s meeting.
