From July 2 to 6 the club will host ‘Mountrath Marquee Festival 2014’ and there will be something for everyone to look forward to. This marquee event will be held in the GAA grounds. Wednesday July 2: fashion show strictly style. Teenage disco. Thursday July 3: spectacular teenage disco with DJ Noel Brennan.

Friday July 4: Dancing with music by Pat Costello followed by Declan Nerney & His Band.

Saturday July 5: Music by Radio Nowhere followed by Hot Fuss. Sunday July 6: monster bingo €5000 prize fund at 3pm. Sunday July 6: Festival close with Stars in your Eyes followed by music with the Kevin Byrne Band.

Bishop Daniel Delaney

The Brigidine Sisters and Patrician Brothers will mark the 200th anniversary of the death of their founder Bishop Daniel Delaney in Paddock, Mountrath on Tuesday, July 8 and Tullow Co Carlow on July 9. A ritual remembrance takes place at 3p in Paddoc on July 8 on the partially restored Delaney Homestead. A commemorative plaque will be unveiled by leaders of the two congregations. Local history will be shared and Camross Comhaltas will provide the music. A commemorative mass will be celebrated in St Fintan’s Parish Church, Mountrath at 5pm on the same day. Bishop Denis Nulty will be the main celebrant. All are welcome.

Pioneers to Knock

Mountrath Community Alert

There were also 206 applications for the text alert service - applications re-opened. Register for €10 by July 6. From from committee: Joh Delahunty, Tony Phelan, Rita Watkins. The target is 350 on the system. Registered with the senior alert scheme so applications being taken must be over 65, living alone or with an eligible partner.

Signs have also been erected with a garda number 057 8674100 should your see anything suspicious.

Ballyfin Community Alert

Thanks to all who contributed to church gate collection which raised €315 for senior citizens Christmas party. Applications to join the Text Alert Scheme have reopened. Contact Sheila at 086 1570145 for more information.

aRts for kids

The Arts Office, Laois County Council is holding art workshops for children with artist Siobhan Keogh over three days for two hours each day in Mountrath from Tuesday-Thursday July 8-10 in the Kiln Lane Community Centre. Children aged 7-12 will get the chance to explore their creative side using many different art materials. All workshops cost €20. Places limited so book early. Call 057 8664033/13 or email

Camera club Golf

Mountrath & District Camera Club golf classic on Friday July 4 in Mountrath Golf Club to raise funds for the club. A percentage of proceeds to Mountrath Christmas Lights Fund. €80 per team of 4, €20 per person. Scramble format. Time sheet from 8am-5.30pm. Mythical Maze reading challenge begins on July 1 for primary school children. Sign up at the library to receive your wristband and chart .Participants must read 6 books over the holidays to complete the challenge and receive a certificate.

Mythical Creatures Drawing Workshop on Tuesday, August 5 11am -12am for girls and boys aged between 8-12 years old. Free but places are limited so booking is essential . Call Aoife at 057 8756378 to book your place.

Adult Book Club Next meeting on Thursday July 3 6.15-7.15pm. We will be discussing The Unquiet by John Connolly. Copies are available at the library and new members are always welcome.

The knitting club continues to meet every Friday morning 10.30-12.30pm all welcome. Drop in for a chat and a cuppa.

Late Matthew EGAN

Condolences to the family of the late Matthew (Mattie) Egan, of Deerpark or Red Gate Cross, Ballyfin who died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. Reposed at home. Removal to St Fintan’s Church, Ballyfin for funeral afterwards to St Fintan’s Cemetery. Donations to Irish Cancer Society.

Late Harold ALLEN

Condolences to the family of the late Harold Allen of Doon, Mountrath who died suddenly at The Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise on June 20. Sadly missed by his brothers, sisters, extended family, neighbours and friends. Reposed at his brother Brian’s residence (Doon), with Removal to St Matthew’s Church, Roskelton for funeral service followed by burial in the adjoining Churchyard.
