The family of Ben and Jake Connolly would like to thank everyone who supported the recent sale of work and cake sale in Mountmellick. Thanks to the organisers, sponsors and everyone near and far who attended. To all who supported the recent race night in Newbridge.

Thanks also to everyone who donated clothes or funds at the clothes recycling drive in the Druid Inn, another unbelievable amount raised for two special boys. Ben and Jake Connolly were born with a rare syndrome called Allan Herndon Dudley Syndrome. They are the only current cases in Ireland. Several fundraisers have been set up for the boys who live with their parents Terence and Nicolette Connolly in Mountmellick. Ben and Jake are grandsons of Tommy and Mary Connolly Doolagh Portarlington.

Cemetery Mass

Cemetery mass takes place in the following cemeteries in Portarlington parish. Killenard Friday July 4 at 7.30pm. St Michael’s Portarlington Friday July 11 at 7.30 pm. Emo Friday July 25 at 7.30pm.


Deepest sympathy to the family of Eileen Williams (nee Moore) St Brigid’s Sq who passed away on June 20 at St Vincent’s Hospital Mountmellick. Eileen was predeceased by her loving husband Ray a number of years ago. She will be sadly missed by her devoted daughters Anna, Cathy and Clare and son Ray, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her extended family and friends. Requiem mass took place at St Michael’s Church with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Eileen rest in peace.

Cycle Challenge

Sunday August 31 all roads will lead to Fisherstown Ballybrittas County Laois for the running of the 100km cycle challenge. Other events on the day include a 50km cycle and a short run for families and individuals. High Nellies also welcome. Start and finish at Fishermans Inn where refreshments will be served to all afterwards. Further information contact 087 2654001.

Portarlington Lions Club, in conjunction with the French Festival Committee, are running a competition to nominate a mayor or mayoress of Portarlington.

Junior Tennis Club

Our summer activities programme starts this Tuesday July 1, every weekday afternoon. Come on the days that suit you. Eight weeks of tennis activities for only €50. Offer includes free membership for 2014. Check it out at the club or on Facebook.

Mini fun tennis for under 7s every Monday and Thursday 2.30pm to 3.30pm. There are some places still available in Tony Lok’s Tennis coaching classes. All levels and ages catered for. Ring 087 1231135 if interested.

There are so much activities happening in the junior section that some people think tennis is only for the children. Portarlington Tennis Club is a great place for adults too. All levels of players are welcomed and catered for. Every Monday at 8pm there is social tennis for adults. This is now well attended and lots of enjoyable tennis is played. For those adults who want to try out tennis there is a free session every Thursday at 11am followed by tea/coffee and biscuits. Rackets and balls are provided. Small children and toddlers/babies are welcomed to the club at this time. Some of the little ones are now playing tennis on our mini courts. Tennis coaching - due to increased demand there is a new adult beginner class with Tony Lok on Tuesdays at 2.15pm. Membership is not necessary to attend this class. Arts and Heritage

The Portarlington Arts and Heritage committee have been asked to host a meeting with Ian and Madge Pinge of Portarlington Australia on Monday July 7 at 8pm in Oriel House Main Street.  

The topic of discussion is the town twinning. If you are interested or know someone that has an interest in following through with this could you please come along to our meeting or contact Celia Deverell at 087 6951410.

World War 1
