Edel Sheridan, a talented young artist from Borris in Ossory will hold her debut art exhibition in St Joseph’s National School, Borris in Ossory from Saturday July 21 to Monday July 23. The exhibition will open on Saturday evening at 5pm with a wine reception and will continue until 9pm. The exhibition will be open all day Sunday from 10am until 6pm and again on Monday July 23 when any purchased items can be collected. The annual Social Services church gate collection will be taken up at all churches in the parish on Saturday and Sunday July 7 and 8. Please give generously. Proceeds from the collection goes towards funding some of the work done by the committee, including meals on wheels, laundry, chiropody, outings, parties and hospital visitations.


The monthly meeting of Borris in Ossory ICA guild will take place in St Canice’s Hall on Wednesday night July 4 at 8pm.


The AGM of the Parish defibrillator group will be held on this Thursday July 5 at 8pm in St Canice’s Hall. Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the biggest killers of all ages in the country. A defibrillator is a device that recognises threatening heart problems and advises the user what to do after applying Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to the patient. All interested in learning CPR and how to use a defibrillator should attend or contact 087 2686070. Heart saver cards that were issued in 2009 have now expired and need to be renewed.


Sympathy is extended to Mrs Marie Kelly, Kilcoke, Ballybrophy on the death of her sister Miss Catherine Moore, Fr O’Connor Crescent, Mountrath. Her death took place on Saturday June 23 and her remains reposed at her home until removal on Monday morning to St Fintan’s Church, Mountrath for requiem mass. Burial took place immediately afterwards in St Fintan’s Cemetery.

The late Catherine, who was only in her 50s had been ill for some time. She is deeply regretted by her brothers Martin and Thomas, sisters Marie and Breda, brothers in law, sister in law, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends.

The third of the 4 month draws in aid of Knockaroo Church Renovation Fund took place on Friday night June 29. The lucky winners were as follows: 1st prize €1000 Mary Kilmartin, The Derries, Camross, (seller Sr Regina ), 2nd prize €300 Carol Giles, Sentry Hill, Borris in Ossory (seller Carol Giles), 3rd prize €100 Eileen Campion, Kyle, Rathdowney, (seller Liz Treacy), Promoters prize Michael Dollard, Knockaroo. Thanks to all who supported this fundraiser and thanks also to all the promoters who sold the tickets. The final draw will take place on Friday July 27 in St Canice’s Parish Hall, Borris in Ossory.

Next week’s Progressive 25 Drive will be the monthly €10 game and will take place on Thursday night in the O’Brien Hall at 9pm.


The Laois Inter Community Litter Challenge has begun. Everybody in Borris in Ossory and Killasmeestia is being asked to keep the place clean and tidy. The weekly sweep up has begun and takes place each Tuesday at 7pm. Dog owners are asked to clean up after their dogs.


Fr Robinson PP is organising a trip to the Holy Land for ten days in June next year. Parishioners who would like to save for this once in a life time trip may contact the credit union in Roscrea where special arrangements are being put in place to facilitate those wishing to save for the trip. The committee of Kyle Cemetery wish to confirm that the cemetery mass and blessing of graves will take place on this Thursday evening July 5 at 7.30pm. A collection will be taken up to help with the upkeep and maintenance of the cemetery.


The monthly meeting of the gardening group will take place in St Canice’s Hall on Thursday night July 12 at 8.30pm. Despite the unfavourable weather there is still plenty of work to be done in the garden so come along and share some tips and advice.


The bicentenary of St Molua’s Church, Ballaghmore will be celebrated on Sunday July 8 at 3pm. A special mass will be celebrated by Bishop Kieran O’Reilly and afterwards refreshments will be served in the parish hall. This will be a very special day in the parish and it is hoped that all parishioners and past parishioners will attend.

The death took place on Tuesday June 19 at the Regional Hospital, Tullamore of Mrs Annie (Nancy) Finnerty (nee Parnell), Charleville, Borris-in-Ossory, Co. Laois. Her remains reposed at Boyd’s Funeral Home, Birr until removal on Wednesday evening to Longford Church (Kinnitty). Funeral mass took place on Thursday followed by burial afterwards in adjoining cemetery. The late Mrs Finnerty is deeply regretted by her son, daughters, sisters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends.
