CALLING ALL BAKERS
The Mission Alive Group is holding their annual coffee morning and plant and cake sale on Friday July 13 from 10.30am to 2pm in Fr Noel Dunphy’s house in Sarsfield St. We’re asking all bakers to get their rolling pins and cake tins out please and donate some home baking to our sale. Items can be left in to Fr Dunphy’s house from 9.30am on the morning of the sale. Plants and flowers are also welcome. All proceeds will be sent to an orphan project in Zambia.
The library knitting group has kindly donated a knitted patchwork quilt to the Mission Alive Group which will be raffled on Friday July 13 at the annual coffee morning and cake and plant sale. Last week chairperson Sheelagh Coyle and Fr Noel Dunphy received the quilt from the group in the library.
SMITH’S FIELD CLEAN UP
Mountmellick Athletic Club is holding a clean up day in Smith’s field (track, infield etc) on Saturday July 7 at 10am. All volunteers gratefully appreciated. Please bring your own tools. Looking forward to seeing you there.
Thanks to all for the huge response to the pilgrimage to Knock for Matt Talbot day on Sunday July 15. Both buses are now completely booked.
Beavers and scouts thank everyone who supported their ice cream Saturday on June 23. They raised €200 for Down Syndrome Ireland. They are now on their summer break and will resume in September.
John Troy of Brittas Clonaslee was presented with a gold award for 20 donations at the recent blood clinic. Thanks to everyone who attended the clinic. There were 152 donors the highest in attendance in years.
Cubs enjoyed their week end to Fossey Mountain Ranch in Timahoe where they enjoyed horse riding after learning how to mount, dismount and respect the animal under the guidance of Michael Lacumbre. Michael also spent many hours with the group leg wrestling, arm wrestling, tug of war, archery and many wild frontier games. They also enjoyed canoeing, hiking and taking care of a new batch of husky pups that arrived some weeks ago and some cubs were able to adopt a pup with the parents’ permission when they arrived to collect them on the Sunday.
The group broke up for the summer holidays on Thursday night and said farewell to Katie O’Brien who is moving to Clare soon and is joining a scout group in Killaloe and to AJ Dunne who is moving to Dublin. Best wishes were also extended to Hannah O’Reilly, Kathleen Dwyer, Richard Maher, Josh Baxter, Michael Dunne and Craig Gibson who are moving up to scouts in September.
Thanks to Jim O’Brien who took the group on a hike on the board walk at Capard recently followed by a picnic. Thanks to all the parents who helped out the group during the year driving the children to venues and helped with fundraising in any way as without the support of the parents the group could not continue to function.
ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION
The next two meetings will be on Wednesday July 11 and Wednesday July 25 in the MDA at which payments for the annual September holiday will be collected. This year’s holiday from Sunday September 9 to Friday September 14 will be in White’s Hotel in Wexford. A special bus will bring us to Wexford on the Sunday and back to Mountmellick on Friday.
The library is setting up a board game club for 10 to 12 year olds and if you would like to put your name down, contact the library at 057 8644572. Artist John Cullen will feature his art work in the gallery for the month of July. All are welcome. Internet access, printing, photocopying and scanning facilities are available at the library.

Our annual family fun day will take place on Sunday August 5. Come along and join us for an afternoon of craic for kids and adults alike. This year’s highlight will be the introduction of our duck derby. For €5 you can support the boys and girls of the club’s juvenile section by adopting a duck, naming it and entering it into the race. The ducks will be placed into the Triogue river and will race to the finish line with the winner set to receive the top prize of a 2 night stay in the Lakeside Hotel and leisure centre in Killaloe. We hope to see you all there.
ROCK JUVENILE GAA
Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps provide boys and girls with an action packed and fun filled week of activity during the summer holidays which revolves around maximizing enjoyment and sustaining participant involvement in Gaelic Games. Feile na nOg 2012 the national festival of Gaelic football, took place in Laois and Offaly at the weekend and it was a great success. A big thank you is extended to the host families from Mountmellick, Ballyfin and Kilcavan and all the members of the club who helped the weekend to be a great success.
LAOIS MARTIAL ART
Kickboxing and taekwondo classes for all ages from 4yrs upwards are held on Monday, Tuesday and Friday in Mountmellick and Portlaoise. Facilities include punch bags and a boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach and national champion. For details contact 085 1371842.
