Electrical recycling

There will be a free collection by WEEE Ireland of electrictal items on Tuesday, February 5 at the Borris-in-Ossory Recycling Centre, 2pm-6pm. Supported by Laois County Council, this allows people to get rid of any household electrical equipment and batteries in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. There are other days around the county throughout February.


The Annual General Meeting of St. Brigid’s Camogie Club will be held on Friday, February 1 at 7.30pm in Rathdowney GAA Club rooms. All members are invited to attend and new members also welcome to this meeting.


The Chiropodist will be in attendance in Borris in Ossory on Thursday, January 31. For appointment please contact Lily Sheeran at 0505-41308.


The National Coursing Meeting takes place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday February 2, 3 and 4 at Powerstown Park, Clonmel. This is the highlight of the current season of Coursing and will feature all dogs who have qualified from club meetings all over the country.

The main stakes to be competed for will be the Champion Dog and Bitch Stakes, the Greyhound and Pet World Oaks Stake and the Derby Stake. Coursing commences at 11.30 on all three days and promises to be a great festival of Coursing.

Tickets for the Clubs annual draw are currently on sale from all Committee members.The draw will take place on Saturday night February 9 in the Green Roads at 10am. Tickets are just €2 each with a top prize of €400.


Borris-In-Ossory Youth Club continues to meet each Friday evening in St Canice’s Hall, or St Joseph’s National School PE Hall Borris-In-Ossory from 7-30 to 9-30 with a range of activities available. New members are most welcome to join.

With the membership increasing weekly it is essential that more volunteer leaders are recruited to help out on Friday evenings. Volunteer Training courses are scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 2 and Saturday, March 9. It is hoped to start a Badminton Club in Borris-in-Ossory. A meeting will be held in the school PE Hall on Wednesday January 30 at 8pm. All those interested are invited to attend this meeting. For further information please contact Damien Carroll at 087-2194703 or Jackie Quinlan at 087-1391136.


Anyone interested in Set dancing classes for beginners please contact Eileen Daly at 087-6699412 (after 3pm). If enough people are interested the classes will go ahead on Monday nights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm and the cost will be €5 per night.


Afternoon dancing for Senior citizens with Maureen Culliton takes place each Thursday in St Canice’s Hall, Borris in Ossory from 2pm to 4pm. All are welcome.


Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place each Tuesday in St Canice’s Church, Borris in Ossory from 10am to 3pm. Adoration takes place in Killasmeestia Church on Thursdays from 9.30am to 3pm and in Knockaroo Church on Tuesdays between 2pm and 4pm. Anyone is welcome to come along and spend some time in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.


The annual 25 card game in aid of Multiple Sclerosis will take place on Thursday night, March 7 in the O’Brien Hall at 9pm. This worthy cause can be supported by buying a ticket, giving a donation or sponsoring a raffle prize on the night. Tickets at €10 will be on sale for this event.


The Joseph Thompson Memorial Billiards Tournament is about to commence. This annual tournament commemorates the late Joseph Thompson, Borris in Ossory, who was a well-known billiard player. Each year it attracts top class competitors from all over Ireland. Anyone wishing to take part should contact the club secretary Joe Dooley on 086 – 8421598.


Membership Fees for the club are now due and should be paid as soon as possible. It should be noted that only paid up members will be allowed into the hall. The fee for adults is €20 and for students and under 14’s it is €10.


Borris in Ossory ICA will hold an Easter Raffle on Wednesday March 27 in St Canice’s Hall. Prizes will include €100 cash, Easter Hamper, Meat Voucher, Bathroom Hamper, Bottle of Whiskey and other prizes. Tickets will be on sale in the near future.


The Annual Church gate collection in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation will be taken up at all churches in the parish on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday February 2 and 3.
