Electrical recycling

There will be a free collection by WEEE Ireland of electrical items on Tuesday, February 5 at Rathdowney Town Square, 9am-12pm. Supported by Laois County Council, this allows people to get rid of any household electrical equipment and batteries in a safe and environmentally friendly way. There are other days in the county in February.


Fit4Life are holding a 5km walk/run on Sunday, April 14 at 2pm from the Marion Centre. The group meet every Monday, from 7pm-8pm at the square, with groups for walkers, walker/joggers, joggers all level of fitness welcome. Over 18’s only, high visibility vest must be worn. The chess group meet every Wednesday at 8pm in Rathdowney Golf Club, over 18’s. New players welcome. Refresher lessons available, contact 087 2388064 for more details.


The grand opening of the new SVP shop is on Friday, February 1 at 11am. There is a fantastic selection of ladies, gents and children’s clothes. We look forward to the continued support of the community. All welcome.


This Friday Feb 1, OCC are holding a table quiz in O’ Reilly’s lounge at 9pm. Support would be most appreciated. Many spot prizes on the night, refreshments will be served. Membership for 2013 now due. New membership is €20 which also includes membership to Cycling Ireland. Existing membership is €30. Those who wish to take out a racing licence should speak to club treasurer John Tynan. The date for our Cycling tour has been set for Sunday April 21, with a 100K and a 50K challenge. Further details will be posted.


The annual general meeting of Rathdowney GAA was held on the 18/01/13. Officers elected for the year were; Chairperson Justin Kavanagh, Secretary Alex Stenson, Treasurer Pat Whelan, PRO Paula Loughman, County Board Delegate Jimmy Rafter.

THE AGM of the Rathdowney/Errill GAA was held on January 20. Officers elected were; Chairperson, Justin Kavanagh, Vice Chairperson Francis Carroll, Secretary Raymond Kelly, Asst Secretary Alex Stenson, Treasurer Pat Whelan, Assistant treasurer Pat Kelly, PRO Paula Loughman, County Board Delegate Mick Fitzpatrick. The club send Seamus Plunkett and his backroom team best wishes for the year ahead with the Laois seniors.


A public meeting will take place in the Marion Centre on Tuesday, February 12 at 8pm with the aim of starting up a Scout group. If you are interested in becoming a leader of the new Beaver and Cub sections please attend. A great Bingo is held every Tuesday Night at 8.30 in the community centre. Support would be greatly appreciated. This Bingo is run by the Community Centre Group.


The group meet every Friday morning in the Marion Centre (beside the RC Church) from 10-12. All welcome, parents and minders with children from new born to pre-school.


Rathdowney Men’s Shed is now up and running, open on Thursday mornings from 10am to 12 noon at the old convent school. Men’s sheds offer a chance for men to work on projects together, share skills and learn new ones, or simply have a chat and a cuppa. All welcome.


Rathdowney/Errill GAA dinner dance is on Saturday, February 9 in the Templemore Arms. Music by Epic, tickets €35, available from Pat Whelan and Pat Kelly, a great night assured.


Rathdowney Playground Group will host a gathering ‘The way we played’ in the Playground and MUGA on Saturday July 20. This will be an outdoor street styled picnic with music, fun and games for all the family. A great chance to catch up and reminisce on how we played. Please invite any members of your family or friends that are away from Ireland to attend, we would love to see them there. The club meet every Monday from 2pm to 4.30pm in the communal centre on Cuan Bhride. They do wonderful work and are like one big family, always happy to welcome new members. So come along any Monday.

Set dancing lessons for anyone over 8 years old are being held in the community centre, every Wednesday evening 7-8pm. Dance teacher Mick Doyle.


The AGM of St Brigid’s Camogie Club will be held on Friday, February 1 at 7.30pm in Rathdowney GAA Club rooms. All members are invited to attend, new members also welcome.
