RTE John Murray Walking Club hold their next walk on Sunday next April 14th in Cullahill.The events of the day get underway @11.00am with the launch of the South Laois Tourism Trails Brochure and Tourist/Heritage Brochure the official walk start is 12noon.A host of entertainers will be along to entertain the crowd before at the halfway point and after walk while refreshments will be served to all.The John Murray walks have attracted upwards of 1,200 walkers so it is important to come early.


The parish lotto with a jackpot and of 6,650 euro was not won, small winners were 30 euro Jimmy Joyce, 25 euro Padraig Phelan, 20 euro Kate O’Brien . The lotto will be in Bobs Bar on April 15 with a possible jackpot of 6950 euro. Tickets must be handed in before 9.30pm on the night of the draw to be included in that jackpot.

All past pupils and friends of Our Lady’s Meadow National School are calling on you help in their fundraising efforts - no matter where you are in the world you can buy a brick for €10 and the brick with your name on it will help build the new class room.


The death took place on Thursday March 28 in Brookhaven Nursing Home of Margaret (Peg) Kavanagh, Cork Road, Durrow following a long illness. A member of a highly respected family in the community the late Mrs. Kavanagh will be sadly missed by her family ,friends and neighbours. A lovely lady in her 92 year, Margaret was originally from Durrow and was predeceased by her husband Michael. She is survived by her daughters Patricia, Margaret and Ann, sons Sean and Mixey, Sons in Law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, relatives, friends and neighbours. Rosary was held in Brookhaven on Saturday night and the remains were removed to Holy Trinity Church, Durrow on Easter Sunday morning for mass.

The late Mrs. Kavanagh was laid to rest in the adjoining graveyard following the funeral service. The huge attendance at the Rosary, removal and burial paid their last respects to a truly lovely lady and to offer to the Kavanagh family their heartfelt sympathy at their great loss. May she rest in peace.

Open Forum

The Harps GAA Club in conjunction with Laois GAA are holding an Open Forum 5 year Strategic Plan in Cullohill Community Centre on Wednesday night April 10 at 8 .00 pm sharp.

Have your say in what you want for your club; 1. Coaching and Games Development, 2. Fundraising and Finance, 3. Communications/Pr and culture, 4. Facilities and Development, 5. Club Structures and Administration.

All parish organizations, past and present members, parents, mentors, friends and the general public are invited to attend. The forum will be chaired by Billy McEvoy and facilitated by Tom Jones of Laois GAA.


Ladies mini-marathon sponsorship cards and tee shirts are available from Kay in Lawlor’s Gala, Eileen Keenan and the office in Our Lady’s Meadow . Please support these ladies as they are raising funds towards the cost of the new extension to the school and thus benefiting the whole community.

Vintage Club

The 11th Annual Vintage Vehicle show and autojumble organised by Durrow Vintage Club will be held on Sunday April 21 at the Cork Road, Durrow. A special display of Lanz Bulldog Tractors and pre-1930’s cars and motor bicycles will take place on the day. Admission ; adults, €5, children free. All proceeds will be given to charity. Daffodil Day

A big thank you to all who supported the Irish Cancer Daffodil Day fundraising event in Durrow. €688 was collected. Thanks to all who donated cakes and food to this worthy cause.

School Re-Union

Durrow Development forum in conjunction with the Gathering are hoping to organise a school reunion of St Fintan’s College (both primary and secondary) in Castle Durrow on Sunday July 28,2013. anyone wishing to help organise this event please contact Marian 0868390266.

Voice of Laois

The Young Voice of Laois will be held in Castle Arms Hotel, Durrow on Saturday May 18 . Auditions are scheduled for Tuesday April 16 and Wednesday April 17 in Portlaois College and Castle Arms hotel respectively. Durrow/Cullohill parish anglers held a Fishing competition for the Billy Lawlor cup on Easter Sunday. The results are as follows 1st Alan Dwyer 2nd Declan McDonald 3rd Pat Dunphy. Under 16 Daniel Brophy 2nd Daniel Regan. Next trout fishing competition for the Bill Kelly Cup will be held on April 14.

Cullohill ICA

The monthly meeting of Cullohill was held on Tuesday April 2 in Cullohill Community Centre.

A vote of sympathy was passed with Patricia Phelan and the Geoghegan family on the death of their mother Margaret Kavanagh.

Members will attend the choir concert at the church in Abbeyleix on Friday April 19. Eight members will go to federation meeting in Camross on Wednesday April 24 . The parish vigil in peace in Christ is on Tuesday April 23 bus leaves Cullohill at 7 pm. Cullohill pilgrimage to Knock is on Tuesday July 2. More details later. Ann Delaney won the raffle and the guild members will help with the John Murray walk on Sunday April 14, from approx 10.30 am to 4.00 pm. lets hope it’s a fine day. The meeting concluded with the usual cuppa and chat.
