The next meeting of the Slieve Bloom Association will take place in the ICA Hall, Mountmellick on Thursday, April 11th at 8:30. If you are interested in promoting, while preserving the Slieve Bloom Amenity area please come along.


The Laois Branch of the Irish Kidney Association will hold church gate collections on Saturday and Sunday April 13 and 14. You support is greatly appreciated and benefits Laois patients with kidney disease.


The monthly social is being held on Thursday April 18 with music starting at 8.30pm. We would like to see more people join us for light refreshments and entertainment. If you require transport please contact 087 9812525 (Mountmellick area only).


The group are holding a disco for 9 to 12 year olds in the Owenass hall on Friday April 19 from 8pm to 10pm, all welcome, strict supervision. Admission is €5 which includes a drink and packet of crisps.


Mountmellick GAA Club is introducing rounders. Anyone interested in playing this new game should look up the Mountmellick GAA Facebook page for details of training.

The Owenass Active Living Group is taking part in The Gathering Ireland 2013. We are organising a number of events and hope to attract a number of people to Mountmellick during Heritage Week (August 17 - 25). These events will be promoted by us, the Heritage Council, Laois County Council, The Gathering Ireland and Fáilte Ireland. The Gathering Ireland website suggests very few accommodation options in Mountmellick. We would like to make this as much of a community event as possible. Wexford artist Mary Wallace exhibition ‘Abundance’ is on view in the gallery for April.

The knitting circle meets each Tuesday morning from 10.30am to noon. Bring along your needles and join in for a cuppa and a chat.


Plans for the next few Wednesdays are: April 10 at 10.30am walking group, assemble at MDA at 10.30am. Please wear high visibility jackets. April 17 at 10.30am meeting in MDA. April 24 at 10.30am walking group.

Weekly activities for members are: Mondays Boccia in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm. Please come to practice on your team because there will be a Boccia Blitz in Portlaoise on Thursday April 18. Tuesdays aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon with the free bus leaving MDA at 11.15am. 3pm to 4.30pm in Wolfe Tone. Dancing with Maureen Culleton is from 3pm to 4.30pm on Wednesday April 10 and 17 in Wolfe Tone Court. There will be no dancing on Wednesday April 24 and May 1. Thursdays music & song in St Vincent’s Hospital from 2pm to 4pm and also art classes in MDA from 2pm to 4pm. Please note that the annual membership fee is now being collected. New members are always welcome.

Keep fit and have some fun line dancing in Conor Davis Park Clubhouse, Bay Road on Wednesdays from 7.30pm to 9pm. The cost is €6. Why not come along and have some fun.


It is now compulsory to wear mouth guards to both training sessions and matches in all underage grades up to and including minor.

Adult Training: Senior and Junior football continues on Wednesday and Friday nights. Hurling training is held on Saturday evenings.

Juvenile GAA: hurling training takes place in Acragar on Monday evenings at the following times: 6.30pm to 7.30 pm for u8 and u10; 7.30pm to 8.30 pm for u12. All new players are welcome to attend. Training for u14 footballers takes place on Monday nights.

The Easter bank holiday weekend made for a busy weekend in Mountmellick Macra. On Monday 1 April, the club held their monster raffle in aid of the macra hall refurbishment fund. The raffle was the brainchild of the late Leo Dunne, a long-time member and mentor of Mountmellick Macra. Leo and his wife Sheelagh organised all the fantastic prizes for the draw and their daughter Ursula organised the ticket selling process. The club would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the Coyle-Dunne family in their endeavours to make the raffle such a huge success. During the Easter weekend, the Mountmellick Macra club’s tradition of lighting the paschal fire and candles was again upheld, The late Leo Dunne had been involved in this over the last twenty-two years and the event was especially poignant this year. The Coyle-Dunne family would like to extend their thanks to the members who carried on the tradition, in this, the first year of Leo’s passing.


There was much sadness at the death of Sarah Dempsey of 6 Davitt Road at St Vincent’s Hospital on Wednesday March 27. Sally was one of the town’s older residents and her passing is sadly regretted by all who knew her. Remains reposed at Moloney’s Funeral Home until removal to St Joseph’s church on Saturday evening. Requiem mass was celebrated on Easter Sunday at noon with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery. The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Sally’s family, relatives and friends on their bereavement.
