The local pride in the history and heritage of Mountmellick was evident as Mountmellick Heritage Society organised a full programme of events for Heritage Week. Talks at the Arts Centre ranged from a presentation on the Mountmellick Canal by Bill Lawlor, to Charlie Flanagan’s memories of growing up with his father Oliver J, interviewed by Claire O’Brien. Walks and tours during the week included a wildlife walk in the Slieve Blooms and a tour of the Workhouses of the region, both of which were very well attended. Mountmellick Heritage Society also organised a series of fascinating exhibitions in the Owenass hall. The exhibitions featured a range of modern and historic Mountmellick Work. a history of Bord na Móna and the bogs of Laois and Offaly, and an exhibition of photoS, maps and memorabilia chronicling the history of Mountmellick.
