Laois Friends of Simon and Midlands Simon Community would like to thank all those who volunteered and support us at the recent bag pack in the Old Dunnes Stores on the Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise on October 25/26. Your support helps us to continue our services in Laois which include Regional Settlement Service and community liaison nurse for the homeless as well as working with over 30 people who need our support services each day in Laois.

Application forms for the 2013 Laois Community Forum Awards are now available. Entry deadline extended to Thursday, November 7 before 5pm. Portlaoise Serenity Group of Alcoholics Anonymous

will hold an open public meeting in the The Beech Haven Centre, St Fintan’s Hospital, Portlaoise on Thursday, November 7, at 8pm. Speakers will be present from both Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon. Admittance is free and all members of the public are welcome to attend, particularly those who may be concerned about their own drinking or with that of someone else in their lives. Light refreshments and sandwiches will be served.

The enrolment deadline for the school year 2014/15 is Monday, November 11. To enrol your child in junior infants, please have your enrolment form with the school by this date. The great demand for places means late applications will not be accepted. Registration forms with enrolment policy from the school office.


November events at the Parish Centre each day from 3-5pm. Wed 6 - fun day with frog racing. The group are also starting a Festive Carols Choir and there is a practice each Wednesday from 4.45pm to 5.45pm in the Parish Centre. We do need volunteers. All proceeds will go to charity; Wed 13 - We expect to have something new at our activities day followed by choir practice; Wed 20 - Maureen Culliton leads us off as usual with a great day of dancing. Also choir practice for charity to follow dancing. Wed 27 - special ladies fashion show with carols singing practice afterwards. Indoor bowls every Monday from 2.30-4.40pm at St Mary’s Hall. The Team Hope completed shoeboxes can be dropped off in Portlaoise at Axa, the Parish Centre, Tesco, and TK Maxx. The closing date for this year’s appeal is Monday, November 11. Cuisle Gala ball

All members of Portlaoise and district gun club are bound by the club rules and the clubs specified shooting days during the season. The shooting days permitted under club rules for the coming season are Saturdays and Sundays until January 30. No shooting during the week.

Care to drive transport service

The Irish Cancer Society’s care to drive transport service in available for patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments in the Mater, St Vincent’s, St James’s, Tallaght, Blanchardstown hospitals. The service is completely free to the patient, a volunteer driver will pick you up at the door of your home and bring you to the hospital, then after treatment bring you home. So if you are having trouble getting to and from the hospital for your chemotherapy treatment then please speak to your oncology team of call Gail in the Irish Cancer Society on 01-2310566.

Divine Mercy

The relic of St Therese, the Little Flower, and those of her parents, Louis and Zelie, will be present for the Divine Mercy Mass on Wednesday, November 6. The rosary will be recited at 7pm, followed by mass at 7.30pm. The celebrant is Fr Paddy Byrne. The relics will be in the church before 7pm. All are welcome.
