The Mission Alive coffee morning and cake sale was a great success. Thanks to Fr Noel Dunphy for the use of his house on Friday August 1. Thanks to all who donated confectionery and raffle prizes. The committee was overwhelmed with the generosity of all who came to suppport the orphan project in Zambia. Thanks also to committee members who helped on the day. The amount raised to date is €2117.


Mountmellick WWI Research & Commemoration Group are planning a number of events to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the First World War. On Friday August 22 at 8pm is a WW1 themed concert by the talented Emer Dunne with Drua and local artists, in Mountmellick Arts Centre. Tickets €10 from the arts centre, MDA, Horan’s shop or the committee. 

On Sunday August 24 at 3pm there will be an ecumenical service in St Joseph’s Church followed by a march to the museum to launch an exhibition of WW1 memorabilia. 

On Sunday August 31 at 2.30 pm all will assemble at St Joseph’s Church to march to the library for an unveiling of a WW1 memorial, displaying the names of all the local men who died in the war. Afterwards Sheila Coyle presents ‘Stories from World War One’, a performance in the Macra Hall.

On Saturday August 23 in the Owenass Hall from 11.30am to 5pm. Rediscover Your Heritage; photographs, pictures, maps, histories, stories and books on the heritage of our town. A History of St Paul’s School, exhibited by the students including the student strike in 1944. Mountmellick Work includes new, antique, modern and traditional pieces of Mountmellick embroidery.


A series of talks and panel discussions on Mountmellick and World War 1, the Great Hunger and the Memories of Mountmellick Town Council will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday August 25, 26 and 28 from 8pm to 9.30pm each evening in the Arts Centre. Contact 086 7914933


In order to purchase land next to Conor Davis Park to develop a training facility, the club is seeking contributors to our club loan scheme. The cost of the land is €6,500 from Laois County Council. We are looking for individuals or groups to loan €100 to the club, with all monies guaranteed to be returned in full. Each week over 65 weeks one contribution will be returned in full until all are repaid. There was much sadness at the unexpected death of Hilda Miller (neé Burns) on Tuesday August 5 at the Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise. Held in great affection by all who knew her, Hilda will be sadly missed. Hilda was predeceased by her husband Derek. Funeral service was held on Saturday August 9 in St Paul’s Church followed by burial afterwards in Abbeyleix. Hilda is mourned by her daughters Helen and Linda, son John, sister Eithne, family, relatives and friends.
