Lovely Laois is a new book of traditional Laois music published by well known musician Aine McGeeney of the band Goitse. Aine is also a tutor of the Music in d’House project run by Abbeyleix Heritage Company with local Comhaltas stalwarts Paul Lynch and PJ Phelan. Abbeyleix Bog

On August 8, 2pm - 5pm the Bog Project launch their community built ‘High Bog’ walkway built by fantastic local volunteers with help from our funding partners, all are welcome to the opening on the bog (beside Abbeyleix Manor Hotel). E T 086 046 6616

Abbeyleix Bog Project Conservation Management Plan funded by the Heritage Council available for review and comment at the Abbeyleix Library and Abbeyleix Heritage House. The plan was made possible by a grant received from the Heritage Council.

Library events

On Thursday August 21 a talk on World War 1 relating to Laois will be held in the library between 6.30 and 7.30pm. It will be given by well known author Neil Richardson who wrote a book about Irish participation in the war entitled ‘A Coward if I Return A Hero if I Fall’. Admission is free and all are welcome. Booking is not essential but it would be preferable if people could contact us if wishing to attend so that we can estimate numbers arriving. Tel 057 87 30020.

On Tuesday August 26 at 3pm Michael Moylan will hold an Irish History Live Show on World War I in Abbeyleix Library. The target audience is 8-13 year olds. Admission is free. Booking is essential.

On Thursday August 28 a two hour genealogy seminar will be held in the library between 5.30pm and 7.30pm. It will be conducted by Sinead Holland, archivist and Laois Library staff member. Admission is free. Again booking is not essential but we would appreciate if people could let us know if they were coming so we can have an idea of numbers. Tel 057 8730020.

Our chess club for adults and children will continue to run throughout the summer. Other clubs such as our book and knitting will resume in September.

Harvest moon dance

Harvest Moon Dance in aid of Knock National School Renovation for Education Fund takes place on Saturday, August 16 in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel. Launch of the Threshing Day also on Sunday September 14 at the launch. Music by Crystal Swing. Tickets from Audrey Brennan 085 7202828 or through the Manor Hotel.


Takes place every Thursday night in the golf club, Abbeyleix from 9.30 - 12.30pm. proceeds in aid of Lions Club funds. With performers such as Pat Daly, Pat Costello, Unity and Laurence Campion, a great night’s entertainment is guaranteed. This Thursday, July 31 Pat Daly will be appearing so come along.

Heritage House thanks

Storm damaged steps at the side of the house have been beautifully repaired thanks to trojan work by the CE Scheme crew and Community Amenity grant funding from Laois co co. Thank you all. The new herb and flower bed at the top of the steps is coming along nicely too.

Shipwreck Dig

Kids Shipwreck Dig Workshop on August 23 10.30am - 12.30pm. Following on from our awardwinning kids archaeology experience held last year, this dig is for children aged 8-12. Admission €5, booking required. At Heritage House, T 057 873 1653.
