EASTER Sunday March 31 sees the annual MacGiollaphadraig Way Walk take place. It will begin in Durrow at 12pm and will finish in Gathabaun in Kilkenny. This is a 17km grade A four hour marked walk which traverses the Failte Ireland approved Durrow Leafy Loop, Cullahill Mountain Walk and the Gathabawn Loop.
The name MacGiollapadraig [Irish for Fitzpatrick] is strongly associated with this particular area as nearby Cullahill Castle built in 1425 was the stronghold and residance of Brian MacGiollapdraig first Lord Baron of upper Ossary. To this day many of the MacGiollapadraig clan still reside along this delightfull walking route.
Cullahill Mountain boasts spectacular scenery where seven counties along with the Comeragh, Galtee and Blackstairs Mountains come into view. As well as these, at this point a monument bush stands to commemorate the spot whare legend has it Cormac MacGiollapadraig was slain by Cromwells men.
South Laois Tourism expect in excess of 150 participants will be part of this event and issue an invitation as part of The Gathering Ireland 2013 to all walking clubs and groups - both national and international - with a special invitation to all members of the Fitzpatrick clan both in Ireland and overseas.
On the day a shuttle bus will be available throughout while refreshments will be served in Mackeys Bar at the conclusion of the walk. The registration fee is €5 and registration begins at 11.30am.
