Woodenbridge Paddlers Raft Race
The Woodenbridge Paddlers will hold their annual Raft Race on Sunday April 7.(water levels permitting) supporting Woodenbridge Community Alert projects (Killermogh Church).Starting at 2pm with registration at 1.30pm. Start point Woodenbridge finish Durrow this section of river bank is also accessible to walkers for the more adventurous spectator. Prize winners in senior, junior and Scouts groups sections.For safety junior and Scouts raft require one adult on board. Max raft size six person. Entry fee 35euro per Raft which will also enter you in raffle which will be held at finish wrere refreshments will also be had.Raft sponsor are welcome.
The parish lotto with a jackpot of €6,350 was not won, small winners were €30, Tom Lawlor, Abbeyleix, €25 Maureen Campion and €20 Deran Kios. The lotto will be in the Durrow Inn on April 1 with a possible jackpot of €6,650. Tickets must be handed in before 9.30pm on the night of the draw to be included in that jackpot.
Durrow/Cullohill Parish Anglers are holding a trout fishing competition for the Billy Lawlor Memorial cup on Easter Sunday March 31, fishing from 10 am with the weigh-in at Durrow Inn at 6 pm sharp. Entries taken at Lawlor’s Flower Shop from 9.30 am. Usual rules apply. Memberships are on sale in Lawlor’s Gala, The Square, Durrow, Lawlor’s Florists, Bridge Gardens, Durrow, and from Secretary Michael Walsh. Durrow/Cullohill Parish Anglers are delighted to announce that they have signed the lease for Granstown Lake and will during the year have an official opening. Work is currently being done on the lake and this facility will be a great asset to all anglers.
The Killermogh monthly whist drive for April will be held in the Parocial Hall, Cork Road, Durrow on Thursday April 4 at 8.30 pm. Please note the change of date, all welcome.
A new session of Pilates Classes will commence on Tuesday March 26 from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm in the Castle Arms Hotel, Durrow, classes are for ten weeks and cost eighty euro. Durrow Development Forum are delighted to assist Mary Ryan in organising a fundraising event for the Irish Cancer Society. As well as selling Daffodil’s on March 22, a coffee morning/evening and a cake sale will take place after mass on Easter Saturday March 30 before the Vigil Mass from 7.30 pm to 9 pm and Sunday March 31 from 11.30 am to 1 pm in the Presentation Center. If you have a hour to spare and are willing to help please contact Miriam Mahony, if you can bake a cake it would be tremendous and if you can drop in for a chat and a cuppa you are most welcome. The launch of Ireland Reaching Out will be held in the Parish Center, Portlaoise on April 4 at 8 pm. in the year of the Gathering 2013 Ireland’s Reaching Out is an initiative to seek and encourage the decedents of these who left your parish to return home from around the world. this programme will be launched by Henry Healey and John Liston. It is intended to hold a training course in Durrow in April to train local people,(free of charge) in genealogy and ultimately create a database of decedents of Durrow Emigrant and invite them home for special events. Durrow/Cullohill parish Anglers held their first trout fishing competition of the season on March 17. It was for the Michael Walsh Cup and there were some lovely fish landed. The winner was Alan Dwyer ,2nd Tommy Coffey and 3rd was Fred Townsend Jnr. Juvenile winner was Daniel Brophy with Lee Coffey as runner up. The next trout fishing competition will be held on Sunday March 31 and it will be for the Billy Lawlor Memorial Cup.
Ladies mini-marathon sponsorship cards and tee shirts are available from Kay in Lawlor’s Gala, Eileen Keenan and the office in Our Lady’s Meadow . Please support these ladies as they are raising funds towards the cost of the new extension to the school and thus benefiting the whole community.
The Stations of the Cross will take place on Good Friday in Dunmore Wood at 12 noon. Please assemble at 11.45 am. All are welcome.
The “Anything Goes” Parade held in Durrow on St. Patrick’s Day gave a new lease of life to the event, while there were some non-Motorised floats, new editions to the Parade were Durrow Vintage Club, Durrow Civil Defence and Durrow Fire and Rescue Service. The judges had a hard task in selecting the winners, 1st Happy Day’s Crèche, 2nd Wooden bridge Paddlers and 3rd Darragh and Oisin Conory. Highly Commended, Little Angles, 3rd Laois Scouts and Our Lady’s Meadow. Entertainment was supplied by Stampede Drumming Group under the tutorship of Eddie O’Neill. The Exhibition hurling game and the outdoor market were a great success. Thanks to everyone who assisted over the weekend. The raffle with 1st prize of weekend away to value of €250 was won by Killian Gaughan, 2nd prize a load of fire wood sponsored by Hubert Hamilton was won by Alice Furey, 3rd Meal for two in Ashbrook Arms kindly sponsored by Sean and Rosezita Murphy was won by Peadar Lennon.
The Harps Juvenile club are holding a cabaret in O’Connell’s Lounge Bar, Cullohill on Easter Sunday night March 31, music by David Furey. Your support would be greatly appreciated. The draw for the Easter Hamper will also be held at the cabaret.
Community Endeavour Award
The Community Endeavour Award for 2013 was presented to Austin Ryan representing the Durrow Vintage Club. This award which recognizes the contribution a club or individual makes to the community of Durrow. Durrow vintage Club as well as preserving and repairing old vehicles it does great work for charity and every year brings large number of visitors to Durrow. A worthy winner of this award.
Fianna Fail AGM
The Annual general meeting of Durrow Fianna Fail will take place in the Castle Arms Hotel on Tuesday April 2 at 9 pm. the meeting will be attended by Deputy Sean Fleming, TD, John Joe Fennelly, MCC and Brendan Phelan, MCC.
The Gathering of Heywood Class of ‘93 will take place this Easter Saturday night (March 30) in Morrissey’s Pub (back room areas), Abbeyleix. This gathering of the 1993 year includes students who would have graduated in 1993 and would have attended Brigidine Covent, Laois Vocational School in Abbeyleix, Presentation Sisters, Durrow and the Salesians College, Ballinakill. All former classmates of that year have been contacted by the organisers Melissa Cole & Lorna Galvin and a very enthusiastic response was received. A great number of the classmates are travelling from all around Ireland, England, Wales and America to attend their gathering and there will be a lot of reminiscing, photos, 90’s music and much more on the night.
