St Patrick’s Day

Route and time change for this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade in Portlaoise. This year’s event gets underway at 12.30pm at County Hall turning right onto James Fintan Lalor Avenue to the Parish Church and then back up Main St to the Top Square. Schools, clubs, community groups and local associations are urged to get involved by contacting Ger Whelan 087 253 0124. The committee meets on Monday at 6.15pm in Egan’s Pub on Main St.

Maryborough NS

The new building for Maryborough National School, Summerhill, Portlaoise, to be opened on Friday, March 14 by the Bishop of Cashel and Ossory, the Right Reverend Michael Burrows. Service first at 11am in St Peter’s Church, followed by refreshments at the school. All past pupils welcome.

Gaelscoil Portlaoise

The offical opening of Gaelscoil Phortlaoise takes place at 10 am this Thursday, March 13 at the new campus in Summerhill. The school was founded in 1998 with just 12 pupils. It now has 249 13 teachers.

Gamblers anonymous

Open meeting in the parish centre Portlaoise on Tuesday, March 11. This is a meeting for people who think they may have an issue with gambling or for those affected by someone’s gambling.

Parish Novena

The Novena to our Lady of Perpetual Help runs each Wednesday at 7.30pm to April 16. The 9-week Novena in SS Peter and Paul’s Church continues on Wednesday, March 12 when Fr Peter McVerry speaks on the topic Shelter the Homeless.

Argos Portlaoise thank customers who gave generously as part of a store collection to help The Alzheimer Society of Ireland and support people living with dementia in Laois. A total of €415 was raised in Portlaoise.

The Library celebrates Seachtain na Gaeilge with an evening of Irish poetry, music, song and dance. On Wednesday, March 12 at 4.45pm all are welcome.

Late Sarah Fleming

Condolences to the family of the late Sarah (Pidge) Fleming (née Kennedy) of Newpark, Portlaoise, Laois / Rathcabbin, Tipperary who died on March 6. Beloved wife of the late John and dearly loved mother to Denis, Austin, Noel and Eamonn. Deeply regretted by extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends. Reposed at the Chapel of Rest at Portlaoise Regional Hospital. Requiem Mass in SS Peter and Paul’s Church followed by interment in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Portlaoise.
