All roads lead to Dundrum, Co Tipperary this August bank holiday weekend as Siobhan Walsh of Portlaoise Macra will represents Laois Macra at the International Miss Macra Festival.

Siobhan from Loughteague is currently secretary of Portlaoise Macra was chosen to represent Laois Macra in March of this year. She will compete against 20 other ladies to fight for the crown of International Miss Macra from outgoing winner and fellow Laois woman Gemma Goulding of Mountmellick Macra.

The very best of luck Siobhan enjoy the action packed weekend. A large Laois contingent is expected to travel down to cheer her on.

Congrats Msgr Byrne

Congratulations to Portlaoise Parish Priest Monsignor John Byrne who was recently appointed as Vicar General in the Dioceses of Kildare and Leighlin by Bishop Denis Nulty. He remains on as PP.

Support Group Meetings

Support Group Meetings for Carers are an excellent opportunity to meet other Carers in the community to share experiences, feelings, ideas, concerns, information and problems while giving you a break from caring. Our support Group meeting for July will take place in Portlaoise this Tuesday, July 29 from 11am to 12.30pm in the Portlaoise Parish Centre.

Drive-in bingo

Portlaoise GAA Club have launched the drive-in bingo sessions at the grounds in Rathleague. The fun family bingo is on the last Sunday of July, August and September, starting on July 27 at 3pm. Overall payout on each day will be €7,500 which includes an accumulative jackpot starting at €1,000. In support of the club, Portlaoise Musical Society and Multiple Sclerosis Ireland.

Knockmay teacher

Laois national school teacher Andy Monaghan is one of 10 benefactors of the Folens Overseas Teaching Fund that helps to finance Irish teachers on charitable trips abroad this summer. Mr Monaghan is a teacher at Scoil Bhríde National School, Knockmay and will travel to Malawi this summer to share his skills, knowledge and expertise through his chosen charity Tikondwe Youth Organsiation. More than 100 primary and post-primary teachers apply for the fund, with ten winners selected.

Head Shave

Sponsored head shave by Billy and Sandra Farrell in aid of the Friends of Emily Brennan on Friday, August 1 in Maggie May’s pub Portlaoise.

A 7km walk in aid of the fund takes place on Sunday

The Portlaoise Parish Lotto jackpot was not won on July 17. Numbers: 2. 17, 23,27. The six match 3 winners won €167 each. This week’s jackpot is €17,000.

Laois Hospice

Laois Hospice wishes to thank the people of Portlaoise for supporting the Laois Hospice Foundation’s coffee morning held on Friday, June 11 at its charity shop on Peppers Lane. The total money raised was €505.

Laois Hospice appreciates all donations of unwanted clothes, bedding, footwear, furntiture etc to the Portlaoise Charity Shop which supports the hospice. Bigger furniture items can be collected call 087 958 6057.

Trad sessions

Seisiún has returned to Laois with an expanded programme for this. There will be weekly sessions in Portlaoise hosted by the local branch on Thursdays at 8.30pm.

historical Architecture

Following last year’s interest in the ‘Big Houses of Laois’ Portlaoise Library will again host a series lectures on the historical architecture. The series will be held in the library in Lyster Square Wednesday evenings 7pm From July 30 to September 3. The lectures include features of vernacular architecture such as the thatch cottage and traditional farm buildings as well as the well-known Stradbally Market House and also a study of the gate lodges. The speakers include architectural historians and an architect and each speak on subjects of particular interest to them. Lectures are free and all are welcome.

The first lecture promises to be a fascinating introduction to vernacular architecture and gives an international context to architectural features found right on our backdoor.

De Vesci Gardens

De Vesci gardens will once again open their gates for the public enjoyment. Taking place on Sunday August 10 from 2-5pm in aid of Abbeyleix and Portlaoise Lions club, the day will include side attractions as well as walks around the beautiful gardens. Admission is €5 per adult and kids free so come along and bring a friend.


Laois Skate Crew are a committee of young adults in the early consultation process of a creating a skatepark for young people in Portlaoise and surrounding areas. Adults with an interest in the venture are invited to call Steven on 085 8230259 to assist in the process.

Youth Cafe

Portlaoise Youth Cafe is opened as normal over the summer months. If your child is between the ages of 10-18 years, why not drop them down to the Youth Cafe, only €1 entry fee on Fridays for 13-18 year olds 2-6pm.

On Saturdays 3-5pm for 10-18 year olds. They can meet new friends, play pool, computer games, air hockey and attend fun activities like music events. Light refreshments served. The volunteers are fully trained in child protection and all are garda vetted.

Late Dermot O’Sullivan

Condolences to the family of the late Dos (Dermot) O’Sullivan of Kellyville Park, Portlaoise who died on July 23 suddenly, Beloved brother of TJ and Breda. Deeply regretted by his loving family, large circle of relatives and friends. Reposed at the Chapel of Rest at Portlaoise hospital. Requiem Mass in SS Peter and Paul’s Church followed by interment in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.

Late William FEEHAN

Condolences to the family of the late William Bill Feehan of St Johns Square, Portlaoise and formerly of Roscrea who died on July 22 peacefully at the Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise. Deeply regretted by his loving wife Maura (nee Quinn), brothers, sisters, relatives and his many friends. Reposed in the Chapel of Rest at Portlaoise’s hospital. Removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church. Portlaoise for funeral mass with burial immediately afterwards in Churchtown Cemetery, Castletown. Donations if desired to the Cuisle Centre.

Late Patricia Doyle

Condolences to the family of the late Patricia (Pat) Doyle of 44 Highfield Meadows, Borris Rd, formerly of Castlecomer. Deeply Regretted by her loving sister Anne and her life long friend Norah, brothers, sisters, extended family relatives and friends. Reposing at her home.
