The Mission Alive group will hold a coffee morning/cake sale in Fr Noel Dunphy’s house on Friday August 1 from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Donations of cakes on morning of sale welcome. All proceeds go to the Orphanage Project in Lusaka in Zambia.


Judging in the annual local tidy town’s competition began yesterday Monday July 28 and will continue throughout the week. The judges will be deciding on best area, best garden, best shop front etc. and all are encouraged to maintain their present high standard. The town is improving year on year and is beautifully colourful at present with all the flowers.

The library summer reading challenge ‘Mythical Maze’ has begun. To take part, sign up, read 6 books of your own choosing and you will receive your Mythical Maze chart with a wristband and stickers throughout the summer.

Preparations are underway for the registration of our 26 athletes going to the All Ireland Community Games finals in Athlone in August. The first weekend we have swimmers and cross-country participation and the second weekend we have both individual track and field and relay teams taking part. Laois County Council invite all those aged 50 years and over to a public consultation about plans to make Laois, its towns and villages, more age friendly. In MDA on Wednesday July 30 from 11am to 1pm.

Wednesday July 30 in MDA from 11am to 1pm there will be a public consultation for over 50s to contribute to plans to make Mountmellick more age friendly. This is a follow up of our Campaign for Action earlier this year. All welcome.

Men’s Shed will meet weekly in Wolf Tone Court until they get their own premises. They are investigating obtaining premises, shed or disused building that can house the tools of the trade. On Sunday August 3 The Rock GAA will hold a summer fun day in the Club grounds from 2pm to 6pm. Free admission, all welcome. The highlight of the afternoon’s activities will be our duck race. Buy a duck for €5, enter it into the Triogue river and watch it ‘swim’ home in the hope of winning one of three great prizes. Join us for some family fun with bouncy castles, novelty races and stalls, food, music and much more. Some added attractions this year include a 50metres x 30metres inflatable pitch and a dunk tank.   


All interested in adding some colour to the town, come along to the yarn bombers meetings every Tuesday night in the Methodist Hall from 8pm. No needle skills necessary as all are willing to share their knowledge. Donations of wool gratefully accepted
