A contract is being offered for development of the Blueway amenity and tourist attraction along the Laois and Kildare border.

Kildare County County Council has invited bids for work to be carried out in the townlands of Lowtown, Rathangan, Monasterevin, Vicarstown and Athy.

The route runs from Lowtown along the route of the Grand Canal Barrow line and follow the trackway along the waterway. The main components of the works include improvement works to road crossings and associated road paving.

Also involved is road marking, safety signs, public lighting, footpaths, fencing and railings.

The deadline for receiving tenders is December 20.

The Barrow Blueway is being developed as a 46K long, multi-use trail built on and along the Barrow Line of the Grand Canal in counties Kildare and Laois.

The route will facilitate water-based as well as water-side visitor experiences. Running from Lowtown/Robertstown in the north to Athy in the south the Barrow Blueway links scenic towns and villages along the route.

While the project involves Laois, is being delivered in partnership between County Kildare LEADER Partnership, Waterways Ireland and Kildare County Council.
