Laois Gardaí went on a railway beat in the county's train stations this week for the annual Garda Twin Tracks day, including boarding some trains.

The annual Twin Tracks day is held by An Garda Síochána partnering with Iarnród Éireann, Transdev Ireland (Luas) operators and the National Transport Authority (NTA), this year taking place on Wednesday May 6.

The objectives of this initiative are: To ensure public safety by addressing anti-social behaviour. Protecting life and property. To engage with the public and provide crime prevention advice. To support Iarnród Éireann and Luas personnel in tackling these issues. Vindicating the human rights of each individual. Preventing crime, bringing criminals to justice, through the detection and investigation of crime, and; Improving rail safety.

Chief Superintendent Jane Humphries, Garda National Community Engagement Bureau said,

"An Garda Síochána, as part of Operation Twin Tracks, encourages and supports this ongoing opportunity to engage positively with the users of public transport, Iarnród Éireann, LUAS and the NTA. This engagement day affords An Garda Síochána the opportunity to maintain a visible presence on board these services while encouraging security and safety on board while preventing and detecting anti-social behaviour.”

Mary Considine is Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann.

"The extensive and high profile public engagement through Operation Twin Tracks complements the ongoing, proactive engagement between Iarnród Éireann, An Garda Síochána, the NTA and other public transport operators year-round.  Joint proactive patrols, rapid Garda response hubs at twenty locations across the Intercity network, and cooperation on specific event plans nationally and locally demonstrate the partnership between AGS and public transport operators across the country.”
