Beginning as a group of parents formed to raise money to extend Knock National School next door, they evolved into a vintage club, now also a men's shed with about 30 core members.
Aided by grant funding, they leased and restored the curate's house of Knock Chapel as a cosy base, and parts of the grounds where they went on to build a large workshop and a geodome greenhouse and create a garden.
Two abandoned tractors are now being lovingly hand restored, while members are also repairing the community field's mower.
There are also woodturning classes and beginners' computer classes by tutor Mark Sythes.
They meet at 8pm on Tuesdays but members pop by at other times too.
“We'd love to have a CE scheme caretaker so we could open up more frequently, even for meetings in the chapel house, with free parking and wifi,” Brian said.
Niall Headen is a member.
“We have a bigger problem getting the lads to slow down and enjoy the facilities we have accomplished, The pace was frantic with the build and restoration projects.
“We are turning the corner with finding a balance between sustainability and enjoyment. It’s all about the banter, the tea and biscuits and having a chat, learning new skills from each other.
“It's brilliant seing the young lads doing their own bits, looking after the tools and equipment, enjoying themselves and realising that problems can be overcome by asking for help and advice. We are lucky to have some more experienced men who are very generous with their knowledge,” he said.
Tutors Andy Fleming and Michael McGrath share their expertise at wood turning, with plans now to fundraise for a second lathe, such is the growing interest. Pat Bowe is their mastermind on repairing vintage machinery.
“The LOETB have been a fantastic help with equipment and tutors. The geodome is coming along nicely with onions, scallions and herbs, Thanks to Donegal Dec and Noel. We have a great working committee who don't dwell on mistakes or problems which helps,” Niall said.
They thank Laois County Council, Leader and Clár and local councillors who give help and finance from their discretionary funds.
“We plan to get a couple of group trips organised later in the year for the craic.
“Rural lads can be reluctant to get involved in training because of a historical fear of the educational system but once they get involved they ask the most questions,” Niall notes.
