A young Portlaoise secondary school is ready to raise the curtain on what is only its second every musical.
About 88 students and many staff at Dunamase College Coláiste Dhùn Masc are involved in bringing The Wizard of Oz to life in Portlaoise this December.

Teachers Lauren Harding and Niamh Brennan are overseeing the production.
“Our transition year students are all involved in some way from performing, to costume making and set design.
“The competition amongst the students for cast was very high, with huge numbers auditioning in the early days in September. Some of our students have performed on stage before and are part of stage schools but however for a lot of them this will be their first time under the bright lights,” they said.
The cast includes Dorothy as Rebecca Marshall, Aaron Langford playing the clumsy scarecrow, Orla Woodcock as the cowardly lion and Noah Brereton is the very caring tinman.
“Our two witches are Kelly McGunnigle playing the wicked witch of the west with the most evil cackle and our very delicate and graceful Ciara Duff as Glinda the good witch. It wouldn’t be ‘The Wizard of Oz’ without a wizard played by the fantastic Elena Nahapetyan Borowska.
“The students have been fantastic to work with, showing great commitment inside and outside of school. We are looking forward to seeing the talent of our students showcased on stage,” the teachers said.
The musical will be held in The Dunamaise Arts Centre on December 14 and 15, at 7.30pm. Tickets now on sale from the theatre.
