WATCH: Laois band The Mere Mortals are back with new video and shows

The Mere Mortals originals return to Portlaoise stage

It’s been some time since Laois band The Mere Mortals released their unique style of music - long before the World Wide Web!

But the local outfit is back and to celebrate their return to a Portlaoise entertainment stage in April, they are announcing the re-release of their single ‘Here I am’. WATCH ABOVE.

The band reunited in 2024 for the TG4 sports programme Laochra Gael which celebrated the many wonderful achievements of one of its members, Pat Critchley.

As well as displaying his skills and coaching on many of the basketball courts and GAA pitches throughout Ireland, Pat was also a member of The Mere Mortals. The other band members (Paul Marron, Paul Brophy, Dick Duff, Des Rigney and Ollie Plunkett), enjoyed the reunion and their TV performances so much that they decided they would love to reform and continue from where they left off some years previously.

So after, as they put it themselves, "what seems like an eternity", The Mere Mortals decided to put the band back together and are already "looking and sounding better than ever".

The group returned to the stage in Portarlington's Anvil Inn in late 2024 and performed in Leech's in Wolfhill in March.

"It’s a ‘Mortal Sin’ that it’s taken this long," say the Mortals. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

Now they're rehearsing for a headline show in Kavanagh’s Bar and Music Venue on Main St, Portlaoise on Friday, April 25.

As well as including many of their crowd pleasers from their extensive touring days in the 80s and 90s, like Travelling On, Jodi, Once Upon a Time and Here I Am, the lads are showcasing a number of their new songs. These include Flying Too Close to Earth, Life Support Machine and Sickness Of The Head…. new music which is sure to please fans old and new.
