What is causing the cold, wet weather AND what is likely to happen next? WATCH weather forecast explainer

An Omega blocking high in the Atlantic is causing the jet stream to drive cold and wet weather over Ireland and Britain according to forecasters.

And, the 10-day forecast from the Met Office in the UK doesn't show any signs of dramatic change though there are signs that it will warm up and be drier.  The Met Office Youtube video makes sense of what is going on.

One weather pattern that is certainly not on the horizon at present is a heatwave.
