A Mountmellick postman who loves to sing is the subject of a short YouTube documentary.

John Lawlor, a native of the Laois town is a postman for the past 18 years.

“Singing is my hobby, I put my videos up on facebook and people enjoy them,” he told the Leinster Express.

He also loves being a postman.

“I love everything about it, getting to meet people and being outdoors. Every day is a challenge, no two days are the same,” John said.

Last Christmas, local videographer John Lynch followed the postman on his route around Mountmellick, as he negotiated barking dogs and chatted to householders.

The video maker interviewed John about his job, ending with a few moments of John's rendition of ‘A Working man’.

A charming 12 minute movie on YouTube is the result, It has had over 1,600 views so far.

“It took a few weeks to make. An Post gave us permission to film it. It was recorded around Christmas so it was great to get the Christmas lights around Mountmellick on it,” said John Lawlor.

The postman’s job has changed “big time” over 18 years he said.

“All the postmen in Laois go to the Portlaoise mail centre to sort the post every morning, that’s a big change. One time we had pigeon boxes now it’s all up to date,” he said.

People still send letters he said.

“Online shipping is a big part now, but we deliver the smaller packets. People still post letters, and there’ll always be bills,” he said.
