WATCH: Taoiseach's election called off after chaotic row in Dáil

Dispute centres on indpendent TDs who back Government sitting as opposition TDs

There were chaotic scenes in the Dáil on the day Micheál Martin was due to become Taoiseach on a new Government formed.

Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy adjourned the Dáil for a third time on Wednesday, January 22 after opposition TDs rose to their feet to object to her decision to proceed with the election of the Fianna Fáil TD. Government TDs applauded her decision.

Ms Murphy would not allow Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald to speak in response to the Government Chief Whip while Labour Leader Ivana Bacik appeared to be on the verge of leaving the chamber in protest.

The row centres on plans for TDs who have signed up to the programme for Government sitting in the opposition benches as part of the deal negotiated by Michael Lowry with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.
